    First of all, your neighbor mechanic is an idiot. This engine has a CHAIN, not a timing belt, and it's not broken. If he doesn't even know that, RUN!! Sounds like your starter drive, or flywheel has a few missing teeth and the starter isn't engaging to turn the engine. Find another (good) mechanic, you'll be able to fix it for way less than that.

    I would suggest that you file an online complaint with the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) and advise them of the problem you encountered.     Trust your mechanic on this one. It is possible that all is toast. With fresh oil the lifters should pump up fairly quickly. If they are damaged as may be the case, then they will continue to knock.     Sounds like you ruined the top end of the engine with the low oil pressure. The lifter noise may go away in a few days like the mechanic says, but that doesn't mean it's ok. Be sure to have your Ford running, parking brake on,and the temp control all the way to hot so it will continue clicking or thumping.     Check your vehicle with the dealership to make sure it has all the updated codes. Ford had significant problems with Explorer transmissions for several years and issued new codes that has to be reloaded. They also has to replace quite a few valve bodies on the trannies too.

    My transmission has a delayed and harsh reverse engagement. this thing literally will clunk into place. It doesn't happen everytime, but enough to take notice.     ok, I had autozone test the alternator and it tested ok. another incident today - my wife was driving the kids down the expressway and the open door dingdingding sound happened. It's off to the dealer tomorrow morning but it's gonna be very hard to diagnose.

    I have not had the alternator tested. I ran the system self check from the dash and it passed the Charging System test but I will have it checked as well. Jim

    did you have your altenator tested? I've had simmilar problems in the past and it ended up being the alternator. and during the problems I never got the battery light on the dash. -kevin

    I am having similar problems with my 04 Ford Explorer. Were you able to get this problem fixed? If so, what was the problem, how did you fix it, cost, etc. Thanks! My rear vents are blowing fine as well, not sure if yours were working or not.

    2005 Ford Explorer 4.0L, 23,500 miles on the truck. Just drove from Grand Junction to Denver Colorado today. Avg. MPG 21. Usually between 15 and 16 MPG in city. If your getting less than get your foot out of the gas pedal. MPG goes down fast on this truck with high RPMs. Hope this helps.

    What is the fuel gauge doing? Is it not registering when you fill up? I had this problem on my 2005. It could be carbon build up on the float or the sending unit.

    Just drove from Covington, Kentucky (5 miles outside of Cincinnati, Ohio) to Gatlinburg, Tennessee about 295 miles one way and got 22.5 mpg. That is mostly highway with cruise set on 72.

    There is an article on the Ford Recall for the Cruise Control Deactivation Switch on the CNN site.     I just bought a 2005 Ford Explorer V6 XLT. It has a factory 1 disc AM/FM radio in it. When I called Ford to see what my options where to upgrade to a 6 disc in dash changer with mp3 and satellite compatible, they said that you can't do it. Anybody have any ideas?

    Never mind -- at least for now -- the stamping-down-on-the-wires might have done the trick. I guess one wasn't in all the way on the coil.

    I was just about to post about the same issue on my '98 Explorer V6, 109k miles. It sounds like a crackling noise. The guy at work said he heard it when I was leaving the parking lot -- as if that's not embarrassing enough. It's more pronounced with the A/C on.

    I'm having problems on my 2003. apparently the previous owner took it in at 31,000 miles for a ring and pinion job. Now I have to pay some $700 for some problem in the rear end. I think we Ford owners have a recall situation. I think ford knows it to.

    With 56K miles, my Explorer developed a grinding/binding feel at rear axle when the wheel were truned and was ready to take off. The dealer diagnosed the problem as "Sticking clutch plates" in rear axle.
