First of all, your neighbor mechanic is an idiot. This engine has a CHAIN, not a timing belt, and it's not broken. If he doesn't even know that, RUN!! Sounds like your starter drive, or flywheel has a few missing teeth and the starter isn't engaging to turn the engine. Find another (good) mechanic, you'll be able to fix it for way less than that.
2005 Ford explorer with 52000 miles. Tune up completed within last 4 months. Loss of power on highway with service engine soon light. Spent a week at Mechanic with no findings other than sometimes misses on #2,6 cylinder. Removed neg on Batt to dismiss light. Continued to drive for 6 weeks with no problem. Tried starting one morning and got an aweful screatching sound like starter failure. Replaced starter and did ... Read More
We drive a 2006 Explorer Limited with 140,000 kms on the clock. Recently we had the same problem with the brake pedal going right to the floor for a second or two before the brakes engaged. Alternatively the brake pedal sometimes felt like the power assisted braking had failed and the pedal wouldn't budge, only to go soft a moment later as above. Most of the time this happened reversing out ... Read More
I agree with nvbanker. I have a 2005 Ford Explorer XP and I purchased brand new. My transmission went out at 42,000 miles and the OD light was flashing and gears slipping. I was even given the defective parts. My SUV was out of warranty and Ford would not take any responsiblity even though I have read about many problems with their transmissions during this period. I had to take mine ... Read More
The BCM is in different locations on different years, but on yours I THINK it's on the driver's side, in the back, behind the panel in the cargo area. If it isn't, you may need to search for a Ford Shop manual online and find it that way. May be able to get a used one that could still be good and swap it out to see if that's it without ... I also have a 2011 Ford Explorer and experienced brake failure, luckily I was pulling into my driveway and had the same experience as you described. I contacted Ford and after almost four months they decided that it was not their problem even though they never ... Read More
I would suggest that you file an online complaint with the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) and advise them of the problem you encountered. I did, even though Ford found no problem with my brakes and I also got stuck with an "at fault" accident, despite the brake failure. The more of us who post the problem with NTHSA the sooner Ford will be forced to find the problem and ... Read More
RE: Truck was DEAD! After a lengthy going over, my mechanic brother--who was determined it was the fuel pump causing my truck to not start--found that a little bitty part was dirty! He cleaned it up, blew out the dirt, just wiped it off with his hands, you know. It hasn't had a problem like this since! Everybody I talked to, including Ford, said it was the fuel pump; but I ... I wondered the same thing. My husband changes the oil and he can't remember when he changed it. It was important because if it ran out of oil in the time since he changed it there is another problem. I think what happened was our dash system was telling us it was time to change the oil and normally he resets it when he changes it but I think he may ... Read More
Trust your mechanic on this one. It is possible that all is toast. With fresh oil the lifters should pump up fairly quickly. If they are damaged as may be the case, then they will continue to knock. I know it sounds horrible but please just start the engine, after checking the oil level agian, and let it run at idle. the STP is a nice idea. This thickens the oil ... Read More
Sounds like you ruined the top end of the engine with the low oil pressure. The lifter noise may go away in a few days like the mechanic says, but that doesn't mean it's ok. This morning my engine began making a noise so I immediately took it to my mechanic. I drove 2-3 miles total and did not go over 30mph. He said it would not harm the engine to ... Read More

We live in Colorado mountains. We're having severe brake problems. On a downward slope, gravel or snow, the brakes grind and vibrate, and do not stop. So, we have 2 options, depress brakes and do not stop or let foot up from brake and do not stop. Not a good scenario when the road is a hair pin turn, drops off 500 - 1000 feet , you want to stop. Hi Gunner, Elvoolz is exactly right, in fact I probably told the person what to do when his was out. Be sure to have your Ford running, parking brake on,and the temp control all the way to hot so it will continue clicking or thumping. ok, I had autozone test the alternator and it tested ok. another incident today - my wife was driving the kids down the expressway and the open door dingdingding sound happened. It's off to the dealer tomorrow morning but it's gonna be very hard to diagnose.
I have not had the alternator tested. I ran the system self check from the dash and it passed the Charging System test but I will have it checked as well. Jim
did you have your altenator tested? I've had simmilar problems in the past and it ended up being the alternator. and during the problems I never got the battery light on the dash. -kevin
