First of all, your neighbor mechanic is an idiot. This engine has a CHAIN, not a timing belt, and it's not broken. If he doesn't even know that, RUN!! Sounds like your starter drive, or flywheel has a few missing teeth and the starter isn't engaging to turn the engine. Find another (good) mechanic, you'll be able to fix it for way less than that.

I would suggest that you file an online complaint with the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration (NTHSA) and advise them of the problem you encountered. I did, even though Ford found no problem with my brakes and I also got stuck with an "at fault" accident, despite the brake failure. Trust your mechanic on this one. It is possible that all is toast. With fresh oil the lifters should pump up fairly quickly. If they are damaged as may be the case, then they will continue to knock. Sounds like you ruined the top end of the engine with the low oil pressure. The lifter noise may go away in a few days like the mechanic says, but that doesn't mean it's ok. They noise will come back, and the engine will not run right anymore. STP is fine as a stopgap, but you have ruined the engine, get rid of the car fast, you will need a new ... Read More

Hi Gunner, Elvoolz is exactly right, in fact I probably told the person what to do when his was out. Be sure to have your Ford running, parking brake on,and the temp control all the way to hot so it will continue clicking or thumping. Check your vehicle with the dealership to make sure it has all the updated codes. Ford had significant problems with Explorer transmissions for several years and issued new codes that has to be reloaded. They also has to replace quite a few valve bodies on the trannies too.

My transmission has a delayed and harsh reverse engagement. this thing literally will clunk into place. It doesn't happen everytime, but enough to take notice. I took to a tranny shop and of course was told I needed the whole thing replaced. It has 54,000 miles, bought used in Feb 09. Does this sound familiar?? Any suggestions??

ok, I had autozone test the alternator and it tested ok. another incident today - my wife was driving the kids down the expressway and the open door dingdingding sound happened. It's off to the dealer tomorrow morning but it's gonna be very hard to diagnose.

I have a 2005 Explorer V8 Limited. Yesterday, driving it, AC and stereo playing. We turned on the headlights and the AC stopped blowing, the console lights dimmed, and the radio stopped playing. Turning the headlights off and everything started back working. Today, I had the battery tested and it tested OK. Placing the battery back in the car and now everything works again. Any ideas? Jim

2005 Ford Explorer 4.0L, 23,500 miles on the truck. Just drove from Grand Junction to Denver Colorado today. Avg. MPG 21. Usually between 15 and 16 MPG in city. If your getting less than get your foot out of the gas pedal. MPG goes down fast on this truck with high RPMs. Hope this helps.

Just drove from Covington, Kentucky (5 miles outside of Cincinnati, Ohio) to Gatlinburg, Tennessee about 295 miles one way and got 22.5 mpg. That is mostly highway with cruise set on 72.

There is an article on the Ford Recall for the Cruise Control Deactivation Switch on the CNN site. I just bought a 2005 Ford Explorer V6 XLT. It has a factory 1 disc AM/FM radio in it. When I called Ford to see what my options where to upgrade to a 6 disc in dash changer with mp3 and satellite compatible, they said that you can't do it. Anybody have any ideas?

There's more . . . I noticed gas coming out of the exhaust. Just like it did before I took it into the shop to get a spark plug hole rethreaded (just with a chaser -- nothing that major -- at least I thought). I was just about to post about the same issue on my '98 Explorer V6, 109k miles. It sounds like a crackling noise. The guy at work said he heard it when I was leaving the parking lot -- as if that's not embarrassing enough. It's more pronounced with the A/C on.

I'm having problems on my 2003. apparently the previous owner took it in at 31,000 miles for a ring and pinion job. Now I have to pay some $700 for some problem in the rear end. I think we Ford owners have a recall situation. I think ford knows it to.

I have an '05 Explorer XLT with 24,000 miles on it. Just bought it from Ford Dealership. I notice that after driving and warming up, it shifts very, very hard from Park to Reverse and also from Drive to Reverse. It appears that it is "kicking" into gear. Is this a tranny problem? 2003 Explorer XLT sport with grinding/binding rear axle
With 56K miles, my Explorer developed a grinding/binding feel at rear axle when the wheel were truned and was ready to take off. The dealer diagnosed the problem as "Sticking clutch plates" in rear axle. While they were replacing the clutch pack, they also replaced gear& pinion, and it apears that most moving parts in the rear axle. I have an extended warranty to 75K miles. I wrote to Consumer Reports about their drastic increase in reports of transmission problems on Explorers specifically. Other vehicles that use the 5R55E seem to be alright (Sport Trac for instance), however, the sealed units in the 2002-2005 generation seem to be very problematic.
