Vehicle

2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Rwd 4dr SUV (4.6L 8cyl 5A)

Review

Nice, roomy vehicle that probably rides better than previous model, but still is much stiffer than a car. Front row seating is comfortable and second row is OK for trips. 3rd row is only for kids and maybe short trips by willing adults. Around town gas mileage with V-8 is pretty sorry; I get 13 mpg with combined street and freeway rides. Highway mileage seems to be about 19 mpg. Eddie Bauer model is pretty loaded with options, but interior appearance is not very "upper class" - lots of plastic. Radio/CD player has good sound (in Eddie Bauer upgrade model). No mechanical problems, except driver's side seat heater quit after 3 weeks (not a big deal in Houston).

Being a Dodge guy, when it was time to shop for a new grocery getter Dodge was aour 1st stop but our last stop was the Ford dealer. The new Explorer is head and shoulders above the older style and yes it's better than the Durango. Attractive styling, quiet, smooth ride and responsive! I may have to change handles!

Replaced a '96 Honda Odyssey (a totally reliable auto!). Build quality improving but not on par with Honda. Int layout and seating fabrics vg. Driver's seat is like an ironing board. ('99 Accord's more comfortable). Gas mileage is awful - 16mpg on daily commute of 70mi. 1mpg better on the highway. Rack an pinion steering very good and ride very improved over 2002. Dealer VG. This truck is not as versatile as Odyssey. Noticed that seat belt shoulder strap is wearing on plastic trim and cutting it as well (hope not a safety issue).

The best low-priced Suv on the market

2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Rwd 4dr SUV (4.6L 8cyl 5A)

Review

I do not own the Explorer I am rating, it is my friends. I have driven it, and am impressed with the 4.6L V8's power. I have also ridden in the third row, and it is rather well designed. At 6'1", I was suprised at the room I had back there. The seat seemed to be slightly angled, to prevent knees from hitting the back seat, and I rather enjoyed the somewhat reclined position. Overall, I was and still am rather impressed. I will be looking for a new vehicle soon, and the Explorer/Mountaineer tops my list.

The Explorer

2003 Ford Explorer XLT Rwd 4dr SUV (4.6L 8cyl 5A)

Review

The Explorer is not only a wonderful mid-size SUV, it's Ford's best SUV, yet. It has made up for past mistakes. A roomy cabin and optional third row seat are a nice add on! A V-6 or V-8 engine can tow great weight. The 1/2 trunk hatch helps with loading groceries. Optional leather interior. 6-CD player is a nice feature. Seating 8 is great, too.

This is a great vehicle. It is surprisingly smooth for a SUV. I have had it for two months, and don't really have any major complaints except for the interior materails (the leather and plastic seem prety cheap). I would definately recommend buying this SUV.

Ford Explorer Limited

2003 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

Review

The 2002 Ford Explorer Limited is great improvement over it's earlier incarnations mostly because of the independent rear suspension which has improved the ride of this class of Ford vehicle imensely. The total redesign of the Explorer was long overdue and needed in order for this very popular model to compete with all the new SUVs that have flooded the market. Ford definitely has designed a winner in this vehicle.
