I have a 2002 Explorer XLT with about 108,000 miles on it. About a year ago my 4x4 High light would flash 8 times every 3 or 4 minutes. It made a noise like it was trying to throw itself into 4 wheel drive when I was driving anywhere and made a grinding noise when turning to the left that sounded like it was metal on metal. The eletronic shift motor, ... Read More
This sucks, but you may have no recourse. This is not common, but there was a recall on SOME Ford trucks about a speed control connection that could cause a fire. I have no idea if your truck was included in the recall. Also, if so, it may have already been fixed. Otherwise, it's not a design flaw on the truck. Apparently you don't what the cause was, so I don't ... Read More

This sounds suspiciously like what happened to my wife's Explorer 2002 last night. She was driving home and all the gauges, lights, and radio went out. In about 5 minutes or so, the truck stalled with a dead battery. Apparently no warning lights on the dash came on. Going to have the alternator tested and hope that's the problem.

After viewing your antifreeze/oil problem I decided to reply as follows: Oil and Water do not mix anywhere. Problem is why? well we all know that most indications occur in the sealing channels and conditions of the engine i.e. milage, maintenance, etc. Ford is one of the worst. Yet it can happen to any make and model. As per the washing machine, thats the typical indication of a blown head gasket. Your rpms ... Read More
Really good question, but I don't think it did. I think the damage was done to that transmission by the initial fill, and rebuilding the valve body and reflashing was not sufficient to repair it. Sounds like it could be a head gasket. Turn the vehicle on and look at the tailpipe. If you see white smoke (not just the initial water vapor on a cold morning), the engine is burning antifreeze.
