Of course, I bring my Focus in bi-monthly, while he has brought his in once or twice.
There is no doubt that the folks writing and responding favor Ford products as I have for many years considering I still have my first 1984 SVO, 2000 Saleen supercharged convertible and 2001 Explorer Sport. I traded my Cadillac Escalade for the Mountaineer because like the enthusiast on the Lincoln Navigator chat section I like the looks inside and out, size, power, new suspension and since I have two children the ... Unfortunately, there appears to be some misinformation on previous posts. The 91-94 Explorer used a part time system for use on slick roads. The 95-2002 use the control trac system that uses computer monitors to apply an electromagnetic clutch (except the awd v8 from 96-2001)(and except the 2001 two door) to put power to the front wheels. Originally the dial on the dash had three spots, 2wd, automatic 4wd, and 4wd ... Read More
I picked up my new 2002 explorer on 10-22-2001. The day we bought it the left rear hatch door striker was out of alignment and the arm popped off. They had to reset the left side brackets and it worked fine for a month and on 11-26-01 I had to take it back in for the same thing. It worked fine for a month and on Christmas day the whole rear ... I started my search in May 2001, Sequoia proved too big (engine tick on that thread scared me to too), Highlander too cheap in quality for the money, then looked at Explorer in June, wife liked it but I figured we’d take a look at the AWD Mountaineer since we live in NewEng. Looked at it, wife liked it even more, so we both win. We looked for a silver, cloth-seat ... Read More
I went down this road with Ford last summer (2000) with my '99 Explorer XLT. This truck was an absolute piece of Ford GARBAGE!!! That said, the truck went to the dealer something like 15 times in 14 months for Repairs ranging from warped rotors to a faulty windshield, to 3 sets of front end seals to ball joints in the front end (get the idea)... Anyway, I submitted a lemon ... Read More
Yes, apparently that was the case. They haven't even started, it seems. It looks like the modifications are scheduled for later this year. It is odd that they didn't design it from the start since this Explorer is an all-new design and usually (major) structural modifications completed after the vehicle platform has already been established are pricey. Here is the information that the IIHS published in their latest release: "The Institute ... Read More
The IIHS did not officially test the '02 Explorer/Mountaineer in their offset crash test. The reason according to them was that Ford is currently making structural changes to the Explorer's design so as to improve crashworthiness. They will test the Explorer when these design changes have been completed and implemented. The 1995 to 2001 Explorer's results are as follows: HTTP://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle%5Fratings/ce/html/95030.htm Drew Host Vans, SUVs, and Aftermarket & Accessories message boards

As an owner of a 95 XLT and a candidate for a 2002 XLT, I have been monitoring several of the Explorer discussions recently. I have an update and a question for all of you. Update: In one of the discussions recently someone was inquiring about the availability of Ford's stability control system in the 2002 Explorer. I talk to Ford's customer care last night and FWIW they said the availability ... Read More
Closing the back window on my 2002 Explorer XLT last night, was not the problem... it was opening it! I heard a snap as I lifted the rear window, paused and looked at the wiper, and then heard another pop and the window EXPLODED!!! There was a 15' radius of glass shards on me and the driveway around me! I am, thankfully, okay but rattled. My 15 day old truck is ... Read More

You just keep giving me more ammunition.. Yes..I've driven 2002 Explorer, not the 2001. If you want to compare, drive them both..treviews are quite subjective. Test drives are free. The Explorer Sport is a COMPLETELY different vehicle. Its a two door version of the 2001 model. The "sport" has a solid rear axle, different transmission, and has none of the safety or handling improvements of the 2002 Explorer...no comparison. There is ... Read More
