1998 Ford Explorer Sport 2dr SUV 4WD

Review

I loved this vehicle when I first got
it. Great power, OK handling (for a
truck), and the perfect blend of size
and capability for me. But it has
turned into a real piece of junk.
Problems too numerous to list here.
My last Ford.

Best Features

Power, size. I have the towing package and have hauled over 4000 lbs at times with no trouble (it is rated for 5800). I can also mount 2 mountain bikes upright in the back, which many similar-sized SUVs cannot do. Seats are comfortable on long drives, ergonomics are pretty good.

Worst Features

Quality and reliablity, obviously. Ford has a reputation for poor electronics, and the Explorer is no exception. A 16 gallon gas tank on a vehicle that gets less than 20MPG is too small. I expected the poor gas milage but not such poor range. Resale value also is not very good.
