Wife bought new 94. Couple of minor recalls taken care of by Ford dealer. Wife neglected oil in 2000 for over a year, and became sludge- had to flush engine oil. But still runs fine. average 17mpg. get 19 hwy. Routine care otherwise. Inside passenger back door handle mechanisms abused by kids and wife replaced herself! Needs front wheel bearings replaced and repacked now but thats it. 140000 miles now.

My 2WD model has held up for 11 years and 200 thousand miles, and it still works. Although I have had to replace many things, Ford is not lying when they say "Built Ford Tough."

Switched out from a 99 4Runner to lose car payment. Biggest difference is in the ride. Much harsher than the 4Runner, noiser too. Power from the v6 adequate but I live in CO at 5500 ft so this is expected (4Runner wasn't much different). I have always had Ford or Toyota vehicles and been satisfied with both. These trucks are very good for the money. Much more interior room than 4Runner. Gas mileage around 15-16. 4Runner was about 17-19.

This is the second Explorer we have owned. My husband drove his 1991 to over 200,000 miles before it puttered out. My 1995 is at 209,000 and still running strong. Any repairs on this thing have been minor and relatively low cost. I would definitely buy another Explorer.

PROBLEMS....

Well I got my 95' in 97' and loved it then. Since then I have had 3 transmissions, 2 thermostats, 2EGR valves and numerous other small repairs. The most irritation thing is the color scheme. Willow Green interior. No other paint job will go with it at all. Lately i got a Flowmaster exhaust cat-back and a K&n air filter and i got back all the power i hve lost over the years from being young and dumb. I think i'm going to hang on to it and do little modifications for a couple more years. oh and the 96' bumperskirt fits perfect for that intergrated fog lights. so my 95 looks like a 96 1/2 and drives like a 99'.

Another poor quality Ford product

In general this truck has been maintenance free but when things fail they fail BIG. The radio failed in the first 3 months. After that it was OK until the transmission failed at 75k miles and (after a rebuild) failed again at 90k miles. The computer generated "OD/ engine" lite illuminates often and it costs $150 to put it on the machine and I learn that "its nothing to worry about". Finally, it costs $150 to get a key and remote control "programmed" from FORD. This is clearly a vehicle made for a 2 year lease = use it and throw it away. Unfortunately, I bought it thinking I could keep it for 150k miles, but sadly have learned that domestic cars are not built for that.

100,000 Miles and still going strong!

I have a '95 Ford Explorer XLT that recently passed the 100,000 mile mark. I'm happy to say that it's still in great shape and still going strong. I did have to replace the power steering system recently, but other than that, it's been a great SUV. This is one Ford that lives up to it's motto...it's built Ford Tough!
