I have heard negative things about Explorers but in five years have not experienced them. I get 23 mpg hwy, which makes it the perfect travel car on my Ohio-Tenn trips for school. It conquered everything I threw at it as an immature 1st time 4wd owner (seriously I'm surprised this car is not stranded in a certain mudpit in Middle Tennessee). The most comfortable car, will haul it all, routine work - brakes, belts, etc. is dirt cheap (and I am a poor college student!). I have 155,000 on it now, a third of which is my doing, without a headache. As expected, transmission wear was easily solved with Lucas trans-fix additive. An $8 bottle has worked miracles for 17k miles.

Within the first yr I had to get another trans put in. Then the gas gage stopped functioning, so I had to count and keep track of my my miles. I was told by Ford that it might cost me over $300 to fix whatyever the problem was, fuel sender, gage, gas tank, etc, etc. The second yr I started hearing noises up front whenever I engaged the 4 wheel drive. There's something wrong with the way the wheels engage when the 4 wheel is put on. That's going to cost me about $600 to fix. This past month,(march), the trans went again. Another $1600 for a so-called remanufactured one with a one yr or 12,000 mile warranty.

Purchased used at two years old with 30,000 miles. Drove very well with no problems for 3 years, then all hell seemed to break out with numerous problems. Auto was very well maintained with all required maintenance. At 6 yrs old, driver electric seat shorted out and caught fire. At 5 yrs old, driver seat seatback metal handle broke off leaving seatback stuck in remaining position forever (found corrosion/rust on the metal joint). Overall, have been treated very poorly by Ford service depts.

My only thought is, if you have 223,000 on it, it has served you very well. Sounds like my first Explorer, 1994, and my best one. Went 150,000 miles with only one problem. Eventually the shift moto...
