Still going at 300,000!

Vehicle: 1992 Ford Explorer XL 4dr SUV 4WD

Yes! 304,000 miles and still going! The gas mileage is at 14.6 right now. Original engine...replaced transmission four years ago at $1300. A little rust at the rear rocker panels. Clear coat is gone. Seats are just now getting uncomfortable. Replaced the radius arm bushings several times. This has been one good vehicle!

Nice at first, then problems

Our 92 Explorer seemed to run just fine until 1998 when it broke down on a roadtrip, transmission fluid gushing out onto the road. Had the transmission replaced for $1800 or so. Same thing happened again in 2004. I will never take it on a roadtrip again. The transmission is not beefy enough for the weight of the car. Nowadays it just slowly deteriorates. For some reason water gets trapped in the rear doors causing them to rust away at the bottom. Rocker panels have also completely rusted out. Overal l-- not reliable, lousy.

Didn't get my moneys worth

We have had so many problems with ours, from electrical to transmission. In the past year alone we have put over 2500.00 into it and thats mostly just in parts, my husband is able to most of the labor.I would be very leary of purchasing a used Ford again.

If the explorer don't work,

Not a bad daily driver

I have had mine for six months and I must say it is a fun vehicle to drive. I will however mention that these vehicles are very high maintenance. Look close before you buy.

Serves me well

Purchased as a fleet vehicle for an emergency response fire/ambulance agency. The four wheel drive has been very dependable, effective and trouble free. This vehicle is used in high altitude mountainous terrain with yearly snow accumulations of over 150 inches.
