Review of the 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

  • Part SUV, part truck, the Sport Trac is much better at the former than it is at the latter.

  • Safety
  • Pros

SUV comfort and pickup truck bed convenience, workhorse V6, features galore, available side curtain airbags.

  • Cons

Ancient underpinnings deliver sloppy ride and handling, can't carry as much as a real pickup, subpar off-road ability.

  • What's New for 2004

The interior gets a minor refresh that includes a revised instrument cluster. XLT models now come with additional standard features, while the high-line XLT Premium gets a new monochrome exterior look. The Adrenalin model now features an even more powerful premium audio system. All models get a flexible fuel feature that allows them to run on ethanol-blended fuel, as well as traditional gasoline. Finally, there is no longer a manual transmission option on XLS models.

My 2004 sport trac adrenalin

Vehicle: 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin 4WD 4dr Crew Cab (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

I have had very few problems with my Sport Trac. Ball joints were replaced at 12k and the transfercase was rebuilt at 29k due to a problem with hanging up in low or not shifting into 4wd at all. Drivers window reg was replaced at 29k and they fixed an evap problem at 35k under warranty. For having such a small engine it still pulls and I have more than once exceeded the 3500 lb towing capacity by 100%(I towed combined 7000 once) The trans cooler is a definete plus for towing. My friends Silverado trans went out going over the divide in Colorado with less miles towing about the same loads as me.(a Jeep) My fluid was cool to the touch while he had smoke comming out of his fill tube!

I love this truck! The handling blows away my Expedition, plenty of power from the 4.0L and and excellent ride. Just scrap the darn Goodyears! I replaced them with Bridgestone Duelers and the wet and snow traction is now amazing. The Pioneer stereo set-up just cranks and my white truck with the chrome of the Adrenalin Package gets positive comments from my customers daily. This truck is great for guys like me who need someplace to throw wet and muddy soccer gear without the overkill of a full size truck. And with a wife and two kids we fit perfectly for long trips. I can't wait to buy my new one next year!

I love it!

Vehicle: 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin 4WD 4dr Crew Cab (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

I traded my 98 Eddie Bauer Explorer on a brand new Ford Freestyle and was miserable. I finally talked my wife into taking the Freestyle off my hands so I could get a small truck and in steps the Sport Trac Adrenalin. I couldn't be happier with everything about this vehicle from the great styling to the smooth driving. I bought a used 04 with 38K miles and it takes off smoother than any vehicle I've ever owned. The 4 litre, 210 HP engine is plenty to pull this truck along and I'm sure it will handle my bass boat come spring. This truck is roomy inside and has all the amenities I need.

This is the second Sport Trac that I have owned; they both have been great trucks.

We absolutely love the new truck and we get compliments all of the time. Enough room to haul and still versatile. The stereo in the Adrenalin is awesome!
