Although I like the concept of this vehicle and it is great to drive it is one of the most trouble prone I have owned. Received it with tires out of balance, 3 recalls, replace thermostat at 10,000 miles, oil pressure switch at 27,000miles, new tires at 29,000, idle air control at 31,000, brakes checked at 27,000 and 30,000 miles - by 34,000 was metal to metal on front - front rotors replaced (this is the fastest brake wear out on any car I have ever owned). Ford needs to get their act together on quality, especially brakes.

No Problems At All

Have owned this since it first came out. Have camped, hauled, went out on the town with it. Always gets stares from people and many questions. 3-5K miles between regular oil changes and normal rotations and mtce. Good brake wear, good tire wear, no squeaks, noises or rattles. 4WD works in snow and mud very well.

I did not buy this as a "performance" vehicle, and with the versatility of the truck-suv-touring car, I can not fault it at all. Love the ride and comfort on long 500 mile + trips, the fuel milage is better than my better half's Liberty. The four wheel drive works very well, brakes could use an upgrade. There are many aftermarket items to sport it up, michelin tires make all the difference over the original goodyears. Needed new ball joints after 20,000 miles, original ones not sealed properly.

HAVE HAD SEVERAL SMALL PROBLEMS: FRONT BEARINGS CHANGED, HORN AND CRUISE CONTROL WENT OUT (TOGETHER),PEELING INTERIOR TRIM FINISH. 4.10 REAR IS GEARED TOO LOW. NOT ENOUGH POWER IN 4WD HIGH. HORRIBLE GAS MILAGE. RIDES LIKE CRAP. HOWEVER, THERE IS NOTHING THIS VEHICLE CANNOT DO. IT MAY NOT DO A GREAT JOB AT ANYTHING, BUT IT WILL ACCOMPLISH ANY TASK YOU CAN THROW AT IT. THE MOST DISSAPPOINTING FEATURE OF THIS VEHICLE IS THAT WITH A LITTLE MORE REFINEMENT, FORD COULD HAVE HAD A TRUELLY UNIQUE WORLD CLASS VEHICLE WITHOUT RIVAL. SO CLOSE,YET SO FAR AWAY.IN ADDITION, THE HORRIBLE RESALE VALUE MAKES GETTING OUT OF ONE DIFFICULT.

This vehicle is very versatile. From loading up friends for the lake or tools for the job, it handles it. It is sporty, rugged, and yet comfortable with many upgrades available. It has suited my lifestyle perfectly. It drives very well and has a quite ride. Biggest complaint is the gas milage but it IS an suv, what can you expect?

stranded @33,000 miles

No problems for 3 years, I was a booster of the vehicle. It failed me coming home from a short trip. stranded for 3 days ( holiday weekend).I was one week over the three year warranty, the "on call" service would not help. It seems my thermostat self destructed, sending pieces to lodge in the water pump, the pump seized and froze causing the drive belt to overheat and break. I have also had many close calls when I change lanes due to the huge blind spot of it's design. have taken a second job on weekends to pay for gas, will sell it soon.

It amazes me how many questions and stares I still get when the roads are full of the Sport Tracs. I could not ask of more from a vehicle this size. It carries 5 and their luggage in comfort on vacation, it hauls dirt/lumber/plants/etc. and washes clean without scratches, it carries a trailer loaded with 4000 lbs of trees 50 miles without straining, and it commutes to work getting about 20mpg. Must admit, I've been very happy with this vehicle of choice.

Needs improvement

At 35,000 miles this vehicle has had the wheel bearings, and u-joints replaced three times. A new waterpump at 30,000 miles, brakes at 27,000 miles. Brakes at two days old squeak continuously - dealer can't do anything about it and suspension is very loose. Great design, but lacks in performance. All these issues are leading me to trade in for better European or Japanese imports.

Worth the Wait

Traded in my F-150 extended cab for a used Sport Trac, and don't regret it at all. While physically smaller, the useable space in the cab is much greater. Bed space is less, but sufficient to move plenty of stuff. With lockable tonneau, it is effectively a huge trunk. Only had it for a month, so have not noticed any issues with accelerate brake wear (yet). Mileage varies from 16 / 21, just like Ford said it would. Only fault I have with it is that you can not get cruise/tilt steering with the five speed stick. Not sure why, but it is annoying.
