Its truck-based construction gives it a lot more capability than you'll find in large three-row crossovers like the Honda Pilot and Volkswagen Atlas. What the Expedition's big body doesn't provide is significantly more room than the biggest car-like crossover SUVs. Passenger space in the second and third rows is a toss-up between the Ford and vehicles like the Pilot. That's even true of the long-wheelbase Expedition Max, which has more cargo space behind the third row but no additional room in the seat itself.

Competitors to consider

You'll likely want to cross-shop the Expedition against the massive Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Jeep Wagoneer and Wagoneer L, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia. How does the Expedition drive? Any doubt that the Expedition's turbocharged V6 engine isn't up to V8 standards should be put aside. In standard form, the 400-horsepower V6 helped the Expedition sprint to 60 mph in a respectable 6.9 seconds in Edmunds' testing. We also tested the available 440-horsepower high-output version. It imbued the Expedition with surprising speed, getting to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. That's quicker than the Chevy Tahoe, even with its larger 6.2-liter V8 engine. The Expedition is responsive and easy to drive when you aren't burying the accelerator into the ground too.

The brake pedal is slightly squishy when you first press on it, but ultimately it's pretty easy to come to smooth stops, which is the important part. The steering has a light effort and helps to make this Expedition feel a little less humongous. Opting for the Timberline model adds a bit more off-road capability through extra ground clearance, off-road tuned shocks, all-terrain tires and a front skid plate.

While you won't likely be driving your Expedition with Secret Service-like urgency, it has some pretty admirable qualities for such a large SUV. It's no Mercedes GLS, but it does not feel clumsy.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Expedition? The Expedition's front seats are comfy and cushy. They have multiple zones of lumbar support and even have a massage function in the higher trims. The second-row seats are also decently plush. The third-row seating is firm but still adequate for adult use. The Expedition's ride quality is pretty smooth too.

We were less impressed by the Expedition's climate control. The air flow from the vents is noisy and not particularly strong. The seat heaters also might disappoint if you really like them to get hot. On the upside, the Expedition is impressively quiet on the highway and around town.

How’s the interior? The Expedition makes full use of its interior space. It's roomier than the Chevy Tahoe and gives every passenger ample room and comfort. The third row's accessibility is particularly impressive, allowing even adults to get in and out without much more effort than it takes to sit in the second row.

The center console is a bit button-heavy. It's not immediately user-friendly, but it doesn't require too much time to master. It's a simpler layout than the Tahoe's too. Visibility out of the front is hampered by the massive windshield pillars. And even though the rear window looks to be a mile away, a clear backup camera and available 360-degree camera system take the edge off backing up.

Technology

How’s the tech? Ford's infotainment system is easy to get the hang of and incudes wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Sound quality from our test vehicle's 12-speaker sound system was unremarkable.

Our Expedition also came with a suite of drive assist systems that made time on long highways much less fatiguing. The adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assistance worked well on a long stretch of highway and worked just as well at night. The blind-spot warning system was an essential piece of tech that kept us on the straight and narrow too, and aside from a slightly overly sensitive lane keeping system, the Expedition's driver aids worked supremely well.

Storage

How’s the storage? The Expedition has a listed cargo capacity of 19.3 cubic feet behind the third row, 57.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 104.6 cubes max. That's less space than its direct rival, the Chevy Tahoe. But the Expedition's extra spaces for all your knickknacks, plus its flexible seating arrangement, more than compensate.

The Expedition is also a good vehicle for hauling little kids around. It has easy-to-access anchors for safety seats plus lots of room to fit rear-facing seats. Towing capability is great with a standard capacity of 9,000 pounds and a maximum of 9,300 pounds when properly equipped.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The Expedition gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in combined city/highway driving with rear-wheel drive, 18 mpg combined with 4WD, and 17 mpg combined with the high-output engine. Those are similar to the EPA figures for other large SUVs. During our real-world testing, we found that it takes a light foot to match the EPA's numbers. Something else to consider is that premium fuel is required to get the quoted power numbers. During our time with the Expedition, we could notice a difference in performance between regular and premium fuel.

Is the Expedition a good value? Honest-to-goodness do-it-all machines are hard to come by, but the Expedition gets close. It's got a gutsy engine, has plenty of space, is built reasonably well (except for some occasional squeaking from hard plastics), and has an available dollop of off-road ability. The upper Expedition trim levels can get pretty expensive but overall we think you get your money's worth. Ford's warranty on the Expedition is solidly average. It offers a three-year/36,000-mile standard warranty and a five-year/60,000 mile warranty for the drivetrain and roadside assistance.

The Expedition isn't fun to drive in the classic sense, but it is rewarding to summon its muscle car-like torque and use this big SUV for its intended purposes. Road trips, daily commuting and heading out to the great outdoors are all right up the Expedition's alley. Everyday driving lends it a Golden retriever-like personality. A gigantic torquey Golden retriever.

Which Expedition does Edmunds recommend?

With a panoramic sunroof, leather interior, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second row, tri-zone climate control, navigation, and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, the Limited has most everything we'd need on an Expedition. It also opens the door to the high-output version of the EcoBoost engine and a sport suspension with the Stealth Performance package, although that gets pricey and limits interior and exterior color choices.

The 2024 Ford Expedition is available in two wheelbases, huge and gargantuan, both of which can be optioned to seat seven or eight passengers. The base shorter-wheelbase truck only seats five. The regular Expedition and long-wheelbase Expedition Max can be had in six trim levels — XL, XLT, Timberline, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum — in rear- or four-wheel drive. 2021 Ford Expedition Limited 4dr SUV 4WD (3.5L 6cyl Turbo 10A)

The Expedition Limited is equipped similarly to the Tahoe Premier, with a lower price point. Tons of interior room, and it handles very well for such a large SUV. The twin turbo V6 paired with the 10 speed transmission feels much quicker than the GM 5.3L V8.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX Limited 4dr SUV 4WD (3.5L 6cyl Turbo 10A)

Amazing space for people or just things. Tons of power options even in the 3rd row with power reclining, power folding seats and USB ports all over. Great torque and horsepower. The technology is definitely advanced with every safety feature you can think of and it’s standard with a covered tow hitch. NOT MISSING ANYTHING. I LOVE MINE.

Where the Expedition offers the same engine in three different states of tune, the Tahoe offers three different engines: a 3.0-liter turbodiesel and 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s. The comparison is surprising: While the high-output EcoBoost was quicker than a V8 Tahoe in our testing, the Tahoe's real-world fuel economy was better. Ford Expedition vs. Jeep Wagoneer

Like the Expedition and the Tahoe/Suburban twins, the Wagoneer is available in sizes enormous and ginormous, the latter being the Wagoneer L. Arriving about a decade late, the Jeep at least brings a spacious, comfortable and well-appointed interior to the fight, and the Wagoneer's trim levels include a few more goodies than the equivalently priced Ford tiers. Like Ford, Jeep goes with a turbocharged-six for the Wagoneer, but arranges its cylinders in a straight line rather than a V.

Ford Expedition vs. Toyota Sequoia

Freshly redesigned this year, the Toyota Sequoia sees Ford's twin-turbocharged V6 and raises it one hybrid system. Even with electric assistance, the Sequoia falls a few horsepower short of the high-output EcoBoost, but its 583 lb-ft of torque significantly bests the Ford. Just as the Chevrolet Tahoe finally switched over to an independent rear suspension, Toyota abandoned its setup for this generation, with predictable results. As if proving a point, its third- and second-row seats are now a little cramped.
