I have never in my 36 years of driving had to replace an engine before. Now, I am currently on my second engine, and getting ready for the third, all before I hit 120K miles. How can these engines go bad that fast??? The first one died at 88K miles (after the warranty expired of course!!!), and the new engine (granted it was rebuilt) died within 30K miles. It is currently in the shop waiting on the third engine. When you pay so much for a car you tend to expect reliability. How reliable can a car be when it is fine one minute, and has an engine crash the second? Now that it is in the shop I will be without a car for 4 to 6 weeks. The last time this happened I actually missed my father's funeral because the car was in the shop and the replacement car was unable to make the trip when the weather turned bad. The main reason I have this car is because of the snow, and the fact that it moves many people at one time, but when you can't use it then those points are moot.
2007 Ford Expedition SSV Fleet 4dr SUV 4WD (5.4L 8cyl 6A)
Clearly, there is a distinct advantage to owning an SSV. This unit came equipped with all the function items every model should have. 3:73 geared rear end, Skid plates all over the underside, rock protection for the fuel cell, bigger brake calipers, rotors and select-a trac 4X4. These are not easy vehicles to find as the used ones have been previously used for Emergency services. However, I got lucky and found one used by a fleet company that did not use them for emergency purposes.
The drivability of this rig is second to none. Intimidating in size, it parks easily in any lot, has great view in the mirrors and is a dream to drive.
I only have one...On a colum shift model, there should be bucket seats in the front with a large storage console between the seats. I plan to modify an F150 console to fit.
2007 Ford Expedition Limited 4dr SUV 4WD (5.4L 8cyl 6A)
This is our 3rd Expedition and the first we have had problems with despite essentially the same engine. The vehicle has had an intermittent misfire for at least 2 years. Has not shown up on computer until this week when engine light finally came on. Coil on plug on cylinder #4 was faulty. After a check of the internet, I find this is a common problem which was confirmed by my dealer's service department. Ford refuses to acknowledge this is a problem with this engine. Big decision now is whether to sell it or keep it and risk a multi-thousand dollar repair bill sometime in the future. No more Expeditions for us which is a shame because we like it a lot more than GM or other products.
Interior room. Ability to carry sizable loads. Ability to carry 8 passengers in relative comfort. Handling and ride are good for such a big vehicle. Love the rear independent suspension with extra leg room in 3rd row and auto-fold of 3rd row seat.
Either fix or retire the Triton 5.4 V8. It is long in the tooth anyway and surely Ford can come up with an engine that is more reliable and gets better gas mileage.
