Summary
What Edmunds.com says
Too much truck for too many people. Buy a Suburban if you need a nine-passenger SUV that can tow heavy stuff.
Pros
Tows plenty of weight, provides safe haven for the family, carries lots of stuff.
Cons
Won't fit in a standard garage, drives like a loaded U-Haul, horrific fuel economy, hard to park, can't beat the Suburban at its own game.
What's New for 2001
Performance is beefed up to 250 horsepower on the 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel V8 and all engines are now LEV compliant. An in-dash six-disc CD player is made available. The Excursion XLT gets platinum cladding and standard chrome steel wheels, and the Limited offers standard power signal aero mirrors, foglamps and an optional rear-seat entertainment system.

We picked up our new 7.3L Diesel Excursion for around $35k. We droveit home and the dealer had to come pick it up because it blew coolant out of a heater hose that didnt have a clamp.Door locks and door ajar lights started acting up just out of warranty. engine blew an oil plug at 88k which nearly cost the engine. Now the transmission is on the way out at 134,000. I had bought 5 Fords in 8 years and I refused to buy another one after this. I also had a SuperDuty F250 with the rotor problems, the door ajar problem and the door lock problems. I can understand somethings can go wrong but their customer service was never helpful.

The Excursion is the best vehicle we have purchased. From driving around town, to driving across the country with our travel trailer, this is the best vehicle for people who want a vehicle that seats many people, gets good fuel mileage, is reliable, and is willing to tow anything. My Powerstroke Excursion with Powerservice additive gets 20 mpg city and 25 highway. An Excursion will beat a Suburban anyday. From Towing to reliability, the diesel engine will outlast a Chevy gas 3 to 1. And thats just the beginning. I saw a Ford Excursion towing a broke down Chevy Suburban down I70 in Missouri. The Excursion is the only SUV that can tow 10000 pounds.
Favorite Features
Outsude temperature deal above the console, diesel engine, five power ports, 10000 pound towing capacity, seats 9 people, rear backup sensor, large mirrors, heated seats. Best vehicle!

My wife and three kids can travel all over without the usual cramped feeling and without any fighting amongst the kids. Can also load up our toy hauler (10,000 lbs.) and go over any mountain pass with ease. Feels very safe when driving in any kind of traffic. Overall a great vehicle. Bought new and have had it for six years.
Favorite Features
Love the diesel engine sound and power. Also all of the room inside!
Suggested Improvements
Bumps are rough when you hit them.
Bang for your buck for a monster beast

The gas mileage is better than my Durango even though this truck is 10 cylinder. The best comfortable ride for long drive. Towing a 9000lbs boat feels like towing a pair of jetskiis (effortless). Three of my door actuators are not working, so I have to replace that. Parking this beast in a small parking lot takes me about 3-4 back and forth motions. Need better turning radius.
Favorite Features
Comfort for long ride. Very good gas mileage for such a beast even when towing. Lots of room. 3rd row seats can be removed and put back easily. Sheet of 4x8 drywall will lay flat on the back.
Suggested Improvements
Better turning radius.

Excursion-a fun trip and room to stretch

Although this was a "Big Boat", it was still fun to drive. The power and economy of the 7.3L/TD was just awsome. We felt comfortible, safe, and secure in our "boat", even our Great Dane agreed. On several trips, the unit always performed to expectations and more. There was always enough room for everyone and everything. Even pulling a trailer was a joy. We hardly knew the trailer was there. We would gladly replace our present vehicle with a newer one (2005 being the last of the line), but for the right price. Right now they are still over priced on resale and under priced on trade values.
Favorite Features
We liked the size, the lift gate/doors,four bucket seats, rear air/heat and controls, ride height (visability), economy(diesel), and of course the 4WD
Suggested Improvements
The seat heater switches be relocated to the dash for better monititoring and have Hi/Lo function. Also courtesy access lights in doors when open.
