  Problem discovered!! Turns out it was a bad left rear wheel bearing, not the tires.

I have gently swerved the car around 40mph to see if it might be the rear bearings. I can't tell any difference in the noise level.   did you ever get a resolution to the problem? My sons 2000 with 101k miles is doing the same thing. the latest dealer fix was an egr solenoid and a replacement vacuum hose. they have replaced maf, fuel pump, coil, plugs, pcv, air filter. same code keeps coming up. any information is appreciated. thanks.

  My 2001 escort has always idled rough when sitting at light or stop sign when in gear. Does not do it when in park. It smoothes out when you accelerate and have been told by mechanics that this is common in the ford escort? any one have similar experience and am I being told the right information? thanks Header1974

  I am getting service engine light on code P0171 system running too lean, In May of this year they replaced the converter when same light went on. Do converters go that fast again or can it be related to the converter and give same trouble code?

  I have the exact same zx2 2001 and the same squeak and bill from ford for the same tensioner and belt. I found when I removed the breather, the squeak left. I will cancel my appt monday for replacement of timing belt and save some money ... I hit the breather with a hammer and the filter was clogged at the input from the air filter..   Click23, I just wanted to say thanks for the information about the crankcase breather filter! My 2001 ZX2 also developed this squeal. It sounded like the noise was coming from the drive belt, so I had a shop replace the belt and auto-tensioner...and it didn't fix the sound.
