Salvage lot employees helpful, found a 1998 ZX2 that had everything needed. Spent most of the day pulling parts then towed my daughters to my house for repairs that I can do Wed. and Fri. this week.
Hey, grey! It sounds to me like your starter is seized up. Mine (1998 Escort LX w/ 2L) did a similar thing over time. I was convinced it was something in the battery or cables, but no, it was the starter. The clicking/fluttering of lights, etc., that you experienced sounds, to me, like a low amperage situation that is probably due to the excessive draw from the starter trying (unsuccessfully) to ... the relay box is located under the engine air filter and to get to it you have to take the whole air filter box and hose out. hope ths helps you
My husband changed the Control relay module(for the cooling fan) in my car today, it is located under the air filter. We got the part from Napa auto parts store the cost was $144.00. The reason we changed it was my cooling fan stopped working. The car works great now... Hope this helps...
I have a 1998 ford escort van, No lights work at all including interior light, the dash lights do not work, oil light etc. The indicators work but not the hazard warning lights. Does anyone have any ideas please
You really don't need to replace the breather filter every time you change the other filters. That thing should be good for at least 70,000 miles. My car has 130,000 miles on it, and I've only replaced it once. I saw someone on another site mention that they cleaned out their breather filter with WD40 and it fixed it....so that might be worth trying IF you are still driving you car ... Read More
Hi, My car no longer screams, I ordered the part from www.rockauto.com. The part number is Motorcraft FA1661 Crankcase Breather Element, cost $9.55. What a difference. I will be changing this filter when I change my air filter, all the time now. Never want that screaming noise to return. Good luck!!!
Had da same prob. with my 2000 zx2, there is a vacuum line with a breather on da top right hand side of your valve cover, u can probably get a bigger breather, i have an aftermarket intake with 1 vacuum line so i put a small air filter over that vacuum and no more squeek.... U can buy a bigger breather or miniature air filter at autozone, pep boys, advanced, ... Read More
I think I have the same problem..what was the part you ordered,or part number?
OMG, I have been trying to figure out the squealing noise in my 1998 ZX2 for almost 2 years. My mechanic replaced my serpentine belt x2, pulley belt, etc. The noise was driving me crazy, my friends actually named my car The Squealer!!!! I couldn't stand the noise anymore and decided to Google. I am so glad I did, thank you so much. I ordered the part from Rockbottom.com and it ... Read More
I took out the thing with 2 screws just behind the motor (toward the front of the car), and was told that that was the resister. Any chance anyone has a photo of the relay location? Another possibility would be more detailed directions, like left/right/forward from the motor by # of inches; or use a compass bearing from the motor as a direction, with the front of the car as north. ... The Blower Motor Relay is under the dashboard on the passenger side. There is a black three or four prong plastic connector plugged into it. Unplug the black plastic connector, Then use a 7 or 8 mm socket to remove the two hex head machine screws. Loosen then both, and remove the blower motor relay. Take note of how it was positioned in there too. Good Luck!!!
The fan in my 98' Ford Escort has stopped working. I have been told it is probably the Blower Motor Relay; however noone has been able to tell me exactly where it is located on the car. I have checked the fuse box under the hood and behnd the glove box above the blower motor itself, still no luck. Any suggestions?
Hey all, Need some help working on my Escort. Little history first, had the alternator replaced a year ago along with the serpentine belt. Three months ago a torsion pulley failed and had that replaced. Now it won't start, you can here it click and eventually it may turn over, but the other day nothing happened. I assume the starter is going bad or a celluloid, battery is new. I would ... Read More
I had the tensioner break on the serpentine belt and the timing belt broke at the same time (is that possible? ). I had it towed to the Ford dealership, all they came up with was the tensioner and serpentine, at an astronomical price to replace. So I took it to another mechanic (ASE certified) and he told me the dealership mis-diagnosed the car. He said the timing belt was broken ... Read More
Hi Robert. This is an old thread I know, but allow me to add my $00.02 worth.Last spring my '01 ZX2 with, at that time <70,000 miles developed an intermittent screeeching/squealing sound similiar to a bad belt/pulley/or bearing. It was due for a timing belt change so I took it in to a trusted local shop who installed a new timimg belt, tensioner and idler pulleys. The noise stopped for a ... Read More

Thanks for posting the information about the crankcase breather filter. I had the exact problems with my ZX2 as Chezelle and i got my replacement part at a local Ford dealer. I installed the part before i left the lot and drove the car for at least 45 minutes in city and highway conditions and the noise was GONE! it took a year to find the cause, and it was fixed ... Robert, I also wanted to thank you for your post. We have a '98 ZX2 that we really like. We took it to two dealers in the Bay Area and to a private mechanic; all three were coming up with bogus repair costs of over a $1000. None of it made sense; we got tired of the screeching and stopped driving the car for over half a year. I stumbled into ... Read More
Click23, I just wanted to say thanks for the information about the crankcase breather filter! My 2001 ZX2 also developed this squeal. It sounded like the noise was coming from the drive belt, so I had a shop replace the belt and auto-tensioner...and it didn't fix the sound. I was on the verge of having the timing belt replaced, but decided to google it instead. Google directed me to your posts. ... Read More
This was a great tip! I have been living with this noise for almost 2 years. It sounded like a belt squealing to me originally and it was diagnosed as a timing belt tensioner. I chose to deal with the noise and wait until I needed to change the belts. The garage did that and the noise remained. They couldn't figure out what the problem was (none of this was at ... Robert, Want to thank you very much for your information regarding that "squeal". My wife's '98 ZX2 was doing exactly the same thing. Our mechanic could not find anything; said he didn't hear it, but did change the electric cooling fan (said the bearings were going bad), but the noise was STILL there $330 later! I ordered the breather filter for $14.44, installed it yesterday afternoon, took a 50 mile drive ... Read More
Quick question. My car is having the same issue. I found in a post linked off this one that the Motorcraft number is FA1661. The number on the top of the filter ... Read More
I have a 99 zx2. Could you recommend a high-performance/high-flow crank case breather filter?
Robert & Maurice I, too, had the tranny diagnosis for this problem. I'm so glad I came here before having the "repair" done! Yes, this filter fixed my '99, and it hasn't run this well in a long time. My local parts store had a hard time finding the part #, so here's the Motorcraft part number for others who might need this fix: FA-1661 F8CZ-6A768-AB (Breather Filter). Thanks, guys, for ... Robert: You were absolutely correct - the noise was caused by the clogged crankcase filter. I can't believe that my local Ford Dealer did not know that it existed. After I told them the part number they read the description and sure enough it was the crankcase filter just like you said. I had a the same Ford Dealer tell me that the noise was caused by "a booster pump in ... Read More
That is the same car that my wife has and it does have a crankcase breather filter. Take a look at the link in my first post. You can see it to the right of the red arrow, unhooked. Chezelle and Robert: I also have the EXACT same squeal/screech noise. However, I replaced the pcv valve and it still makes the same noise. The 1998 ZX2 does not have a Crankcase Breather Filter - at least that is what the dealer said when I tried to buy the part (I also could not find one in my Chilton's Repair Manual). It is interesting to note that the noise goes away ... Read More
Chezelle, What you have is a clogged up crankcase breather filter. This is a $10-15 dealer part, and it takes about 2 min to change. My 1998 Ford Escort runs great except for an intermittant squeal or screech that no mechanic has been able to fix.
