I have a 1996 Escort 1.9 Liter. I just took it in to have the trans fluid changed and after I picked it up I drove home about 4 miles from the shop with no problems. The next day I am going up a hill and it slips out of gear for about 3 seconds and the engine reves. After 3 seconds it went back into gear. i have a 1996 ford escort that just went out on me. When i was driving it, the highest speed was 40 then after awhile, it died on me...so i had it towed and now all it does is make a whining noise when i turn the key and doesn't try to start....any suggetions? Read More...

Again, I think that picking specific models of beaters is rather futile because the make or model is less relevant as the condition that the car is kept in. Also, mileage is less relevant. I've looked on the internet for a gizmo to read the fault codes, but it seems like they are for 1995 and earlier vehicles. For Ford 1996 or newer a code reader seems non-existant. I didn't like the 'passive' rear wheel steering that was built into the rear suspension of the 1991-1996? generation of Escorts. The rear end would step out at different times, and this is not a great thing in a front wheel drive car. Maybe I just wasn't used to it (and I had owned high powered rear wheel drive vehicles - 5.0 Mustang, etc.), but this led to me wrecking ... Read More...
