EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

The Escape doesn't offer the finest hybrid system, but for some, the flexibility of a well-priced SUV may be an acceptable trade-off.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

Certain dynamic compromise have been made to maximize economy, among these are numb electric power steering, low-grip low rolling resistance tires, an odd initial brake pedal feel, and a droning CVT-induced engine sound.

Comfort

RATING

Droning CVT, and a pitchier ride than the standard model. Non-electric A/C compressor makes it hot at signals.

Function

RATING

Finicky buttons, especially with the optional NAV. Max A/C disables the hybrid stop/start, but most owners don't realize this.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

The exterior design is somewhat dated, the interior looks functional, but suffers from a plasticky look, and stalks and buttons have marginal tactile feel.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Economical Transportation Economical by its hybrid nature.

Fuel Efficient Not as high MPG as some hybrids.

Daily Commuter Commuting fuel costs will be lower than for traditional gas-powered SUVs.
