  We just losst our transmission (2009 Escape) at 27,000 mi., third problem. First was a major repair to transmission at 11,000, a recall and now ours is sitting in CO waiting for someone to look at it as we were driving to the West coast. We will trade it in when we get home!

  I was somewhat concerned when Ford went to rear drum brakes on the 2008 Escapes. I had four wheel disc brakes on our 07, however after test driving the 2009 V6 with rear drums we purchased the vehicle. The brakes are very good--smooth, nice pedal pressure and the stopping distances seem every bit as good as our 07, if not better.

  I wondered about the control arms that you mentioned. However, we have had our two Escapes, 2007 and 2009 on some fairly rough trails and no problems with them at all regarding contact with rocks, etc.

  I thought the way you do about rear drum brakes but the 2009 Escape had so much to offer I bought one in Sept. Never looked back. The brakes are very good. My 2009 seems to brake better than my 2009 Limited that had four wheel disc brakes. The rear brakes only do a small percentage of work compared to the front I am more than satisfied.   "If there was a hybrid station wagon, I would have recommended that. " For your small vehicle, you might consider the Ford Escape Hybrid, it gets around 31 in all cycles (real world, 2009 AWD model). Of course, they are pricey...

  2.5l, cool, I stand corrected. I just got back from Brazil, and there they sell a Ford EcoSport, a tiny little crossover based on the Fiesta. It looks like an Escape that was left in the dryer too long and shrunk! :D Found a pic:

  I was talking to a local Ford salesman the other day and he seems to think that the 2009 Escape is going to be on the lots by the end of July or first week of August, but they will be early. I don’t know about the rest of the country, but in Tacoma, WA most of the dealers seem to have a fair amount of 2008’s still on inventory.

  Recently I saw a review of the 2009 Escape, can't remember the site, and the writer stated that there was only the D and L position, just like the Edge. Why does Ford continue to do this?

  THis car will. be worth the wait. THere will be a new 4 cylinder engine and more HP from the 3.0L v6. THere will be more NVH insulation. There will be upgrades to the rear brake system. The biggest drums in its class. Sync will be available along with Ford's next gen nav with sirius travel link. Mark

  Hi, I plan to order a 2009 escape soon. I currently drive a 2006 xlt awd escape. I've read that the new 2.5 4 cyl is much improved, close to the current v6 in performance. Any thoughts on this?

  It did because AdvanceTrac RSC is now standard on all Escapes and that involved an upgraded braking system. It's still front discs and rear drums for the gas versions but braking is said to be improved. Read the second page of C&D's first drive of the '09 I4, V6 and hybrid Escapes.   Today I was stumbling around the Ford website and found out that the 2009 Escape will have an available 230hp 3.0 V6 and a 6-speed transmission. YIPEEEE!!! Go to Ford.com and on the home page you will find a window called "In the News" scroll until you find the "2009 Escape Debut in DC" dated 1-22-08.

  Just finished reading the review. Ford has added some good items--stability control, traction control and extra air bags, but why, why for the sake of a few dollars--the backwards step to rear drum brakes, without the option of discs. Manufacturers certainly do some dumb things, sometimes. I will keep my Escape with its disc brakes. Hopefully Ford will change its mind before the 2009 model.
