With an aging 3.0-liter 200-hp V6, 4-speed automatic, and new-for-'08 drum rear brakes, the "new" Escape is an automotive relic in a world of truly new crossovers. The new electric-assist power steering is the sole upgrade for this model year. The Escape's tow rating is a nominal 1,500 pounds, or 3,500 pounds when Class II-equipped. Both are barely adequate. Despite all of its dynamic deficiencies, the Escape is not incapable of lending a bit of fun to a favorite road.
Compared to other new vehicles in this category, well-informed shoppers will notice the Escape's choppy, unsophisticated ride. Seat comfort is adequate, but without telescoping steering wheel or adjustable pedals, the "perfect fit" might be elusive for some. Rear doors are small, don't open very wide, and passengers will have to negotiate the wheel arch intrusion to find the uncontoured rear seats.
The Escape's instrument panel, HVAC, and audio control layouts are quite good. Even with the optional Audiophile system that requires touch-screen use for some stereo functions, we found it intuitive. Climate control is equally easy with large knobs. With the second-row seats up, the cargo volume (29 cu-ft) is average. The multi-step procedure to stow second-row seats to maximize rear cargo is outdated and cannot be performed solely from rear of the vehicle. Rear glass and door may be opened separately. There are no tie downs or power outlets apparent.
Son of Explorer style is a step toward family resemblance, but is certainly no benchmark. If blending in is what you seek, then the 2008 treatment will still suit you fine. While we question the durability of the "piano black" painted interior surfaces, they do look pretty. Most other surfaces are well textured but some are hollow-sounding. Every panel appeared straight and every gap was tight on our test vehicle.
Daily Commuter
As most people actually use "sport utilties" as daily commuters, so too, will they do so with the 2008 Escape.
Cargo Hauler
This is a modern-day station wagon with the look of a sport-ute.
Family Friendly
Room for passengers and cargo.
