I have a 2004 ford escape XLT 3.0 V6. Last summer it started idleing rough and acting funny. Slowly over time it kept getting worse giving misfire codes, stalling at lights etc. I changed, plugs, wires, both O2 sensors, fuel filter and was getting ready to replace EGR valve when I discovered the actual problem under the hood stareing at me. I should say hissing. This triggered some old school memorys ... Read More

I finally took a look at a 2004 vs a 2005 fuse map in the different years owners manuals and found that there are seveal differences between them. I see the fuse that is #27 in the 2004 and their is no similar fuse with those same functions in the 2005. The term GEM module is not used either. Every fuse I have pulled and looked at and tested has been ... Read More
I can't believe Ford doesn't know what this is. We also have a 2004 Ford Escape XLT, V6, New battery, both the battery and the alternator test OK. Also from Arlington Heights Ford, and ... Read More
I myself keep getting the run around from everyone at all dealships. One mechanic says my transmission problems are due to one thing then the other says something else and so on. I am just in the process of buying a 2004 xlt-I am taking it in on weds to get it cked out. I did a search for recalls and seen that there was a recall for a wiring connector to the abs module. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I'm very very concerned about the mechanic you are using. First, the alternator would have nothing whatever to do with the misfire in the engine. It's wierd you would be so conversant with the catalytic converters, glowing, front and back, etc., but not know that - whatever.... If the cat was glowing, the exhaust wsa horribly rich, meaning a serious overload of fuel in the combustion chambers, more than just a ... Read More

According to NHTSA, looks like nobody has died. I have owned 7 Escapes, still have 2 06s, with 80,000 miles on them, no brake line problems, in hot and dry Las Vegas. Not saying it hasn't happened at all, but not sure it's universal either. Or maybe the problem has been corrected on newer models. The oldest ones I have had have been 06s.
I have a 2004 escape and I have replaced the brakes at 3 times in the last 15 months. The calipers, rotors, lines, most recently the lines were replaced last month. tonight I was going through Mcdonalds stopped at the first windo no problem. Went to the second window and zero brakes!!! I wonder how many people have died??
My 2004 Escape did the exact same thing this week. Front passenger brake line blew. When I told my mechanic that this seemed like a rare occurrence he said he has seen it on other Escapes (this shop services a company with a fleet of Escapes). He recommended replacing all brake lines because the others were also cracked. I've never heard of anyone having to replace all their brake lines for ... Read More

With your budget of $12k, you have lots of choices in a small SUV not just a Ford Escape. However, if you like the Escape I would go with the 2006 model year. 2005 was the first year that the Escape came out with the "intelligent 4WD system" that is a little different then the old 2004 and earlier model system. First year anything usually tend to have a little more ... Read More

Usually a 4x4 light comes on under two circumstances. 1. the 4WD system is on and engaged (working) or 2. malfunctioning or overheated. I have a 2002 Escape. Battery dies if car sits for 10 days to two weeks. Some evidence that drain is coming from CD/Instrument cluster but no proof. Lights on dash dim. Precisely why I went with a 2004 Escape (back in 2004) instead of the 2005...that and the fact that I got a super killer deal. 2004 and older 4WD Escapes come with a similar system as the 2005 and up models which is FWD biased but will transfer traction to the rear wheels when slipage is detected. However, I am able to turn a switch on the dash and turn on ... Read More

By the way, wasn't all this discussed during "The Great Cover-Up of 2004" when the Escape's hp and torque dropped several digits? "right.... The Ford/Mazda 2.3 does just fine in moving the Escape/Tribute right along." ... Read More

I'd like to get advice on brakes for my 2001 Escape. It has already had two brake jobs (one in late 2002 and one in early 2004) from the Ford dealer for approximately $400 each. I'm getting ready to take my car to the dealer for its 60,000 mile maintenance and I KNOW they are going to tell me I need new brakes again because they're squeeling. Is there an alternative ... I have to say I love my Ford Escape XLT. Well, that was until November of 2004 when I started taking it in for a hesitation problem to my local ford service center. They still haven't fixed it. I have spent over 400 bucks. Every time I call to tell them their newest guess hasn't worked they make me come in and test drive it until it happens with a service ... Read More
I leased my 2005 Escape XLT 4WD in Oct. 2004, the Dealer replaced the Rear End/Axle Assembly in May 2005. Since then I have a shudder when the transmission is shifting from 3rd to 4th gear. Ford says it is the Torque Converter locking up at between 48 and 52 KM per hour and that this is an inherent problem with the 2005 XLT 4WD. Do any other owners experience this ... Read More
I guess you are not reading carefully.... Technically, Escape could be in 2004 or 2005 VDI (which corresponds 2001 and 2002)... Then I wrote "I wouldn't expect to see Escape in that list. Escape was born in 2001 and Model year 2002 is the SECOND and the worst year of Escape which I find normal for new model to have problems." Why are you still looking for Escape in the list????????? ... Read More

"These are not initial quality ratings, but a 3 year reliability ratings. Even with the "numerous" engine fires and transmisison failures CR-V is the top dog, compare to the "problem free" Escape/Tribute/Mariner...." First of all, engine fire and transmission issues are not applicable to this study. This list covers only 50635 original 2002 year make/model owners. Anybody encounter this? For the past few weeks, the hybrid would shut off completely when turning off the car. Dead. Nothing. Each time it seems to take a little bit longer before it might think about starting. Last night we stopped at the store before going to the movies and turned it off. Got out. Went to lock the doors with the FOB and nothing. It would not lock. I got ... Read More
"Accord sales shrunk 23.7%, Civic 24.7% compared to 2004 May. And this is not related gasoline prices.... " Well, I suppose that is true, but you should also note that those values are only for the month of May, and that the year to date numbers are somewhat better: Civic -13.8% and Accord -7.9%. The honda light truck division is booming, up 14%. Eating someone's lunch there, probably GM and Ford. ... Read More
This is funny. You say a 2002 Focus for 6K? Ever checked low blue book on a 2002 Focus? I can buy a new Focus in my region for 9K. An STS Focus sells for 14K. Try to get a Civic EX for 13K, they will laugh you out of the showroom. Honda dealerships advertise Civic Ex's for 18K. Honda's cost more in my region.. Lots more than comparable equipped vehicles. ... Read More
Well, I have currently am renting a 2005 XLT V-6 and I really enjoy the drive. I haven't driven any type of SUV before so it's a pleasure to be a little higher than a sedan! I've noticed some transmission problems with some of the older Escapes and was wondering what types of problems anyone is experiencing regarding the 2004's and 2005's. I can't complain about the gas mileage either...I got ... Read More
I currently have 92,000 miles on my 2001 XLT V6 Escape. Absolutely love my Escape as I do all my Fords. It has had it's problems over the 3 1\2 years while I have owned it, but it's still in my opinion a great little SUV. About two years ago I was getting a lot of creaks mostly from the front end. A year and a half later it's starting again. ... Read More
Any older Escape/Trib. owners experience an odd engine whine ? Mine just cropped-up a couple of weeks ago. Not sure what it is yet, but I'm trying to trace it as best I can. It's annoying at lower speeds when you can really hear it. It's a high-pitched whine like something is winding up-down. Oil level's fine, tranny fluid's o.k. too. Had it at the dealer for re-flash, wonder if there's ... Read More
