  I can't speak to all your problems but the cruise control problem I have dealt with and personally fixed. If you know how to use a wrench and a zip tie you can fix this problem yourself.   I had the same exact problem and it is simple to fix. What's happening is that the battery has a bad ground. The cable can be tight to the battery but can be loose some where else.   I also have a light gold 2003 Ford Escape I bought 3 years ago. The paint on the roof near the windshield started peeling about nine months ago. Someone suggested I find out if there is a recall. After reading all of these complaints, I am surprised there is not one. Perhaps there will be soon.

  My 2003 escape is also peeling around the left side of the back window and between the sunroof and the windshield. There was someone on vacation in our state form arizona that took a picture of ours about six months ago because they had identical peeling and were trying to get their Ford dealer to do something about it.

Note that this car was never driven in adverse conditions, on-road only, no towing, etc. Complained to Ford and the response was, 'sorry, out of warranty'.   Diane, I have the same issue, 2003 Ford Escape that periodically does not start. It seams to happen when their is a significant change with temperature in any particular day. Once the engine has cooled down, say 1-hour, it start right up. I have taken it to the Ford Dealership, they can not find the problem, no computer codes for them to read. Have you had any success?

  In my experience the Escape has adequate ground clearance for mild off-roading but does not have a true locking differential for muddy steep climbs and no lo-range for steep rocky descents. Jeeps are much more confidence inspiring if you're in the middle of nowhere in the mud.   What is the asking price of each vehicle? Probably asking more for the 2003 Highlander than the 2005 Tribute. We have owned A Ford Escape and 2004 Highlander V6. Both are reliable. I actually enjoy the Escape more. Smoother, better transmission. Of course the Highlander had a few more luxury features.
