Hi Burbondog, My car (Mazda Tribute, same car as the Escape) started failing the exact same way as you describe: It breaks o.k. until lower speed (5...10mph), then it increasingly stutters. It breaks o.k., but it seems not to have full break power. Could you send me the exact wording and whatever would help to identify this problem? And how much did you pay for the repair? Thanks for your help ... Read More
I had this same problem. I don't have the exact wording from my repair but they told me my front axle was cracked. Somehow the ABS brake system ties into the front axle and this was causing the "chatter". They only had to replace a portion of the front axle and now the problem is solved. Sometimes it seems like I didn't have all of my braking power. The ABS did ... Read More
My 2003 Ford Escape, 90,000 miles, brakes normally until below 5 mph. Below this speed the ABS "chatters" twice before the vechile comes to a complete stop. This occurrs at low braking pressure and on dry pavement. When I remove the ABS 60 amp fuse from under the hood, the problem goes away, but of course I then have no ABS protection. Does anyone have a solution? TT

It seems to me that the defenders of Ford here are missing the key point - the Escape seems to do worse than other cars we've owned for city MPG. Yes, I don't coast for four blocks while cars weave around me coming up to all lights ... Read More

We went from a 2003 Highlander to a 2013 Escape and so far the MPG (nearly 2000 miles) have been a real comparative disappointment. Despite the 300 pound weight drop and the small displacement engine the highway cruising MPG seems to run around 24 MPG and the city MPG is down around 18. You know, they dropped the instrument panel gear indicator in the 2008 model refresh, which tells me it isn't really that important. If you car is going into gear fine, I would just let it go. If there is any indication of transmission trouble, then have it looked at.
I recently bought a 2003 Ford Escape Limited with 60,000 miles in mint condition. I noticed that the gear indicator light on the panel isn't lit....I had to turn on the interior lamp light to see it. everything else on the panel lights up just fine. Finally after 3 stalls in the past week which coincided with temperature nearing 90, the check engine light came on. I took it to the Ford Dealership and said please check the Idle Air Control Valve as recommended by many members here as well as a mechanic at my job. Most likely the idle air control (IAC) valve which is right smack on the top of the engine in the center right under the hood. My 2003 Escape suffered from periodically being unable to idle for 4 years with Ford charging me hundreds of dollars each time I took it in and telling me they couldn't find anything wrong.
