2002 Ford Escape SUV XLS Value 2WD 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

I bought this vehicle about a year ago as my first car after much thought, and I must say I made the right choice. I chose it for gas mileage and looks, and was able to get a great deal off craigslist. The required maintenence was pricy ($1000 for a new timing belt), but expected. The vehicle is spacious inside, while being able to fit in almost any parking spot and turning around in places other cars can't. The standard transmission is the way to go given the 4 cyl's engine power.

Favorite Features

Gas mileage. I calculate the mileage after every fillup, and my last two calculations were 27 and 28 mpg. It does, though, vary greatly on driving habits. Also, This vehicle is very roomy and open inside for being relatively small.

Suggested Improvements

The road noise is terrible at highway speeds, and the engine runs at around 3000 rpm at 65 mph.

Review

Purchased this vehicle used (end of lease). Excellent condition. Ran into problems with manual transmission, idler bearing self-destructed. 3 weeks to replace, but local dealership was extremely accomodating. This sort of failure should simply not happen with a manual transmission.

Favorite Features

Excellent fuel economy for a small SUV. Good shift manual, even for a front-wheel drive. Good ride for a light truck.

Suggested Improvements

I hope that the transmission does not "go south" again, although this is an ongoing complaint, from what I have read.

Review

Have 128,000 miles in 4+ years. No problems. Never back to dealer for any repairs or problems. Avg. 21-24 mpg. Still solid. Spent 4 years on construction sites with no ill effects. Used as primary family vehicle. Daughter hit a deer on spring break with it; vehicle was A-OK, but deer wasn't. Still handles well and is quick. No complaints about CDs sticking or gear shift lever blocking access to anything. Large number cubbyholes are useful. Compared it to RAV4, CR-V and VUE. Escape was by far the best value and fun/comfortable drive. Wife, daughter and son all like it.

Favorite Features

Dependable, well-built, MPG, utility, sit up high, small and maneuverable.

Suggested Improvements

Nothing of consequence.

2002 Ford Escape SUV XLS Value 2WD 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

This car has been so dependable. No problems what so ever. Normal wear/tear such as tires only. One set of breaks just replaced. Will replace (only when needed) with another Escape! Highly RECOMMENDED!!!!:):):)

Favorite Features

ALL AROUND GREAT CAR!

Suggested Improvements

Only suggestion has already been correct in the 2005 Escape (cannot wait to have one). The gear shifter is too big and sometimes cannot see radio (luxuary item only)....

Review

I have found this SUV to be all you could want or expect for the size and money. Handles great, good power, comfortable, clean profile. Very good A/c and heat, CD player and radio ( sound sys leaves something to be desired with windows down). Not a luxery SUV, but has all you need and more. CONs: cheap tires (Generals, which I had found to be good prior to this?. As stated, for the money, a very fine SUV.

Favorite Features

Handles great, AC/Heat, CD player, visibility, powerful V6 and good gas milage.

Suggested Improvements

Better grade tires. Better sound system. When windows down, a lot of road noise.
