Bad Tranny's
Vehicle
1999 Ford Econoline Cargo 2 Dr E-350 Cargo Van Extended
Review
This van has to have a new tranny every summer! I have 82,000 miles on it and have had 4 tranny's put in. They have a transmission fluid over heating problem. It gets too hot and the cooler is too small; gets plugged and fries the tranny. Got tired of dealer so passed on having them stick in another bad tranny. Put in our own cooler, switched to synthetic fluid. So far so good. Van has serious tranny problems and service has really stunk. This is the first year we have so far so good got through the summer. Never again! What a nightmare this van has been. Run like the wind...
Favorite Features
I liked the body style better than other large vans. Seats are nice and comfy. The V10 is nice for getting up and going.
Suggested Improvements
TRANSMISSION! Ford really needs to fix their constant transmission problem. Make a bigger Transmission cooler with bigger tubing so it won't plug. Recommended fluid expands and blows seals. Suggest synthetic fluid.

Review
Having owned a '93 Taurus (bought new & a very sour lemon (blown engine @103K miles), the '99 E250 was a chance. Had the truck built with all of the toys, incl. GVW of 8300 lb. This 'Green Monster' has performed flawlessly, with the exception of front end alignment @ 10K, and EGR valve @ 35K. The 5.3L engine is noisy when cold, the drive train whines @ 40 mph.
Favorite Features
5.3L V8 is a torque monster. Avg. MPG is 15.2, with a high of 17.9, & a low of 13.1 mpg. Starts easily @ -24 f. Tows a trailer well. Looks better than Chevy. This truck rides like a truck, but has no rattles after 53K miles .
Suggested Improvements
Quieter engine, quieter drive train. Cargo area vents, door lock swich @ cargo door. C'mon Ford, improve your reputation. Mac

bought vehicle in nov 98, in two months the engine needed to be replaced, it was leaking oil out of head gasket, after 8000 miles it did the same thing again, another new engine was installed, it now has 35000 miles and still leaks, the transmission doesn't shift right when it is cold, it also leaks, the brakes pull violently to one side when braking at highway speeds, the whole van shakes when you drive over 65 mph, worst vehicle i have ever owned, Ford would do nothing for me, i will never buy another
Favorite Features
has a good amount of pickup, thats it!
Suggested Improvements
rebuild the whole truck from the engine u
