Edmunds' Expert Review
by the Edmunds Experts
Pros
- Multitude of engine choices, dual air bags, standard anti-lock brakes, and fairly decent driveability.
Cons
- This van has a hard time squeezing into most standard garages.
What’s new
While its cousins, the F-150 and F-250, receive ground-up redesigns, Ford's full-size vans receive minor enhancements. The new 4.2L V6 replaces the 4.9L as standard, and optional power plants now include the new Triton 4.6L and 5.4L V8s. A new front bumper and grille refresh the outside while a revised dash and front console, redesigned seats, an extra power point and seatbelt pre-tensioners round out the inside changes. A 3.31 limited-slip rear axle is offered and the three-speed automatic transmission is deleted.

392,000 miles and it refuses to die
tyler, 07/07/2008
1995 Ford E-350 Econoline 3dr Cargo Van
I drive my vehicles until they die. This thing just won't give up. Sure, I maintain it and repair little things when they break. I use the best oils and regularly check everything. But it is getting ridiculous because this van won't give in. I want another truck only because I'm bored. Oh, the transmission thing...the problem is that the transmissions have a cup shaped connection on the … right side of the trans. The seal dries out and the connections corrode. Disassemble it, a few shots of solvent, blow it out with canned air and add some dielectric silicon grease and it lasts for about 2 years... then do it again. The hard shifting and failure to go into high gear is all gone now.

It will tow ANYTHING

1992 Ford E-350 Chateau Club Wagon 3dr Ext Van
No issues at all. It is the perfect family vehicle. Captain's chairs with fold down sofa in back. Had a second set of captains chairs and sofa pushed to the rear made room for 9, but no cargo. 10 mpg around town, it is what it is. A huge 460 on 4.10 gears. 6 mpg towing 8500 lbs and loaded with kids and gear. But it does it like nothing is there. At 180,000 it developed a lifter or … rocker noise. No performance issue and some Rislone helps. E4OD has worked flawlessly. The E350 is built on a much heavier suspension than the E150 and it will last the life of the vehicle. Factory tow package needs no boosting to perform. Radiator size and cooling is awesome.

1997 E-350 with Powerstroke Diesel
ThatBigGuy, 03/26/2009
1997 Ford E-350 XL Club Wagon 3dr Ext Van
We bought it to haul around the family and also for use in our business hauling people. It currently has 365K on original engine and tranny. Not sure how or why the Powerstroke got in there, but it has to be the best engine for this type of vehicle. It will cruise at 70 mph all day and night while hauling 3000 lbs of canoes. Everything in it was built for heavy use. Seats are all in … decent shape with only moderate cracks in the vinyl. Extremely utilitarian, with rear ac/heat fan control being the only creature comfort. Probably a prison transport vehicle due to odd wear patters in ceiling. It gets nearly 20 MPG on highway. The thing was meant to do nothing but haul people, and it performs!

The best big van
ChrisDavis, 09/29/2003
1996 Ford E-350 XLT Club Wagon 3dr Ext Van
We needed a BIG van for our growing
brood - 9 children. When you're
looking for 15-passenger van, the
pickings are pretty slim. You can go
with Dodge, Chevy or Ford. In my
opinion, it's no contest - Ford simply
makes the better van. We've owned this
van for 6 years, and have no intentions
of selling it any time soon. Keep in
mind, almost any repair on a vehicle of …
this size will be expensive. The seats
are big and comfy, even for adults.
This van can haul a family of 11,
including all their stuff, and a fully
loaded trailer and never miss a beat.
But don't expect much for gas mileage,
at best ours gets 15 mpg on the highway.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 1997 Ford E-350, so we've included reviews for other years of the E-350 since its last redesign.
