Vehicle2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid SEL 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid CVT)
ReviewHad the car for about 10 days.
Average mpg so far, 36.
I'd be happy with 43 or 44, but there have been only THREE occasions when the small instant trip mpg guide popped up and showed mpg over 47.
I mostly drive this car on shorter trips of 5-10 miles.
Only if you can miraculously keep the gas engine off will you be able to get above 40.
This is with acceleration so slow as to be a hazard to traffic kind of driving.
I had one perfect condition (50-55 mpg) parkway driving trip of about 50 miles that still couldn't produce but 40 mpg and the return on interstate doing 70 was 36 mpg and mostly flat constant conditions.
NO WAY this car is going to meet EPA reported 47 - 37 yes, not 47.
Best FeaturesHas more acceleration than a hybrid probably needs for a mpg focused driver. The customizeable driver screens are good. The interior space is much larger than you'd expect.
Worst FeaturesSync is finicky and sometimes too difficult to use in driving situations. If you're big selling point if mpgs on a car, then you should get within a few mpgs of the EPA reported sticker. Given how artificially conservative you have to be to even get in the 40s on a trip, there's no way any kind of normal driving will be above the 30s. If you're buying this for gas mileage, do not expect it to even be in the neighborhood of what's advertised.

I agree. The best I can do with real world driving is 35 mpg's. Overall, I do like the car.Report it

After putting nearly 2000 miles on my C-Max, I was able to get 47.1 mpg in freeway driving. It simply requires attention and patience: gauges show when the car is using the gas engine and when the electric motor kicks in. Backing off of the gas pedal a very small amount can result in a significant increase in fuel economy. When I first got the vehicle, mileage in the mid- to upper 30s was typical. Now I can get 42 mpg easily, and the figure continues to rise. So, yes, the vehicle CAN get the EPA figure of 47 mpg with an intelligent driver.Report it
