my 2003 sprinter 3500 which I've had since 2005, is shutting off on hills,as well as on the highway when the engine has been running for awhile. This is a very dangerous situation! It was happening occasionaly- 1x/yr until later in 2010+ summer of 2011 till now. It's presently @ my mechanics after trying to get a dodge dealer to resolve problem. dodge has now sent me to Freightliner who in turn ... Read More
HI , i have a 2003 -3500 dodge sprinter witch I need help with, after a couple crankshaft sensor replacement ,due to a broken fly wheel this van has not stopped giving me problems. I put a rebuild turbo thinking that may be the problem of the black smoke and power issues, but nothing. I replace the air mass sensor and nothing , some one told me that it may be ... Read More
I have a 2003 Freightliner badged Sprinter with 65000 miles on it. The same problem described by Mark Lorenz has been happening to my rig starting at 30000 miles. I found that by turning off the engine, the system would reset and I would be good for several days until the turbo derated again. At first the techs could not find anything wrong (because when you stopped it would reset) and ... Read More
Thanks! However, I think the truck is just a P.O.S.!! We purchased a new ECM for mega $$$$ and the truck started right up. Then after 2 weeks, same thing. ECM went bad AGAIN! So, now they wouldn't just exchange the ECM. They had to send it off to get looked at to see if the problem is the ECM or if it's the truck that is making the ECM go ... Read More

My husband recently purchased a Dodge Sprinter van with a Mercedes diesel and one day he was out working all day and it was fine. He came home and was inside for about an hour and when he went to leave again, he cranked up and then shut off. That is all it does not. We took it to Dodge and they hooked it up to their machine and it came ... Read More
Hi I have two 2003 3500 Dodge Sprinters that I've had since new. Both have approxmatly 150K miles on them. The first one developed a loss of power around 125K and the problem was traced to leaking fuel injectors around the seal for the injector and caused replacement of head, all injectors and injector seals. The dealer replaced these items. The second Sprinter has the same problem and I've removed the ... Read More
I traded in a 2003 Ford E250 van for an 06 Sprinter back in Jan. 06. This is the best decision I have ever made for several reasons. (1) I knew that the Dodge dealers claim of 660 miles/tank is pure horse hockey, however I am currently getting 450- 500 miles/tank, with a fully stocked van for Electrical construction. Most of my traveling is around town, and the 03 Ford, with ... Read More
im a licensed electrician in nyc i bought a 2003 sprinter 3500 in jan 04 it was a leftover. i bought this van when i started up my business,i had waited for 2 years to make the jump from employee to employer and one of my happiest days was when i picked up my van from merrick dodge and drove it home, this is when the fun started.as i drove my van ... Stay away from 2003... EGR problems (causes driveability issues and extra maintenance). Have driven both FORD (gas and Diesel) and Sprinter. Sprinter fuel mileage is much better overall, but a lightly loaded (but full) FORD (1ton - diesel) can get 19 MPG through Yellowstone Natn'l Park... not bad. FORD however, takes 4 gallons of motor oil every 5,000 miles (oil change interval, not oil burned), Sprinter takes 2.5 gal. every 10,0000 ... Read More
flex, since no one with a 2007 gave a reply for two days (mine is 2004, no running lights), I would try shutting down the Sprinter, apply the parking brake, then re-start the engine... on other brands this usually disables the running lights as it is assumed that you don't need running lights if the parking brake is set. DO you have the high-idle feature? If not, you may need to ... Read More
They were not imported from the EU until the 2003. Both Dodge and Freightliner sell the Sprinter. I think most of the Freightliners were sold to RV conversion companies such as Forest River. If I was buying a used one I would get the newest possible, so you have the 7 year 75k mile warranty on the drive train. I wish I had that engine and transmission in a 1/2ton PU ... Read More
Hi all...been researching the Sprinter and am having some trouble finding stats/specs on the Sprinter prior to 2004. I'm in the market for one, and am trying to figure out how to search for such vans BEFORE they were called "dodge sprinters"... Can anybody fill me in on what years it has been in the states, and if it wasn't a Dodge in 2001-2003 (or earlier), what was it? I looked ... Read More
I have a 2003 Sprinter which I purchased used from a Dodge dealer last July. It has Central locking on it. This is a very nice feature, but it seems to be more trouble than it's worth. I've had the van back twice for system reset. They tell me it's very sensitive and uses the same system as the SRS system. It will stop working when the van thinks it's been ... Read More
