Went out to start it on Saturday..made that awful noise. Left til it could be towed to the mechanic today. Just got the call that most likely this the rod is gone. The engine is shot. They have to tear into to see. They said they had one that did this last year. I was hoping to seek out information that Dodge has stepped up to the plate on this defect. ... Read More
First off, was it a 4wd or 2wd? What was the mileage? Actually, many of us do have a clue about this. The problem on some first generation Durangos was due to upper ball joints that allowed moisture to enter the joint, displace the grease, and eventually wear out the dry joint (somewhat quickly). The recall was issued around 2005 or 2006 for 2000 - 2003 models, but only 4wd. The ... Read More
I purchased my 2002 Dodge Durango in the summer of 2009. 5.9, SLT - fully loaded to the max, I also even added flowmasters and thru in a KN filter. Beautiful truck!! BUT...(and I paid for cash for it also) - This SUV spent more time on a flat-bed getting towed then it did on the road with me behind the wheel. It would not start - I had to replace ... Read More
I hear that! My main car is a BMW 2001 X5. It has 174000 miles on it and still runs like a dream. Dodge could learn a lot from a quality auto maker. they just make junk.
I can sympathize, but don’t expect Dodge to do anything about your problem. I just traded in a 2011 Durango Crew with similar problems that - after several visits to the dealer and a complaint filed with Dodge was deemed a "characteristic of the vehicle by design" leaving you little recourse. In fact, my story is much like yours right down to the service advisor making it seem like the problem ... Read More
2011 RT. 4700 miles, no problems so far. This Durango is built so well..., I don't forsee having any. Dodge has come a long way in terms of quality since the 80's and 90's. I was a straight up Chevy Man until 2005 when I bought my first Durango, and now it has over 100k and has never been in the shop except for normal maitenance and 1 smoking dash recall. ... Read More
I took my Durango to a transmission place and had the transmission oil and filter changed, so far it has solved the problem. Why couldn't the Dodge dealership figure this out? After I spent 7 days at the dealership and $1,200 plus they replaced a $1,000 part under warranty.
2005 dodge durango a/c works off and on. replaced fuse and relay for compressor but didnt help. when working blows cold air, must be an electrical problem?
I bought a Stone white Durango RT back in May of this year, and what a amazing SUV! I love it! I've actually set cruise @ 65 and got 25-26 mpg on a flat Hwy, average back and forth to work (hwy and city driving) I ave a little over 19mpg. I've owned a 2004 Durango limited hemi since 2005 and it still has never been in the shop and has ... Read More
The main issue have here is a BAD DEALER!!! Automotive technicians range from outstanding to horrible and they all work at dealerships. Many dealerships are interested in quick fixes because they want to move a volume of vehicles through their service bays to keep profits up. Hard problems they will BLAME on the vehicle owners. Also many dealerships only hire cheap labor in their shop so hard problems don't get fixed. ... Read More
I have been to the dealership 7 times to get my problem fixed with my Dodge Durango Hemi 2005. It bucks and sputter mostly at around 45mph, but since they have worked on it the problem is worse and does it at all speeds. I had been having problems with my Durango starting, the check engine light came on, took it to the Dealership to have it checked. They said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. My 2005 Durango has some weird electrical problems going on with it. It started out with the front blower unit quitting working. Soon after, the radio quit (completely), power door locks quit (unless the key is in the on position), windshield washer fluid pump (completely). When you turn the key off, its as if you unhooked the battery. All power to the entire durango stops. Any ideas on what could be ... Read More

You really need to file a complaint with the NTHSB about what happened. I've been down that same mountain road many times on my way to Florida and its dangerous enough when your vehicle is functioning properly. It's actual injuries/fatalities and near misses such as you've experienced that my eventually prompt the government to force a recall. Save your receipts for the repairs because if something is ultimately done, Dodge will ... Read More
I have a 2005 Durango with the Hemi engine. Yes it did the stalling once in a while. But last Monday we were on our way back to Florida coming down a steep Mountain in Tennessee (highway 24) when our engine seized. No you don't have power steering and brakes!! I was very lucky that my husband was driving since we were driving at a high rate of speed. We coasted ... Read More
Well, I had no choice but to replace my 2004 engine because otherwise I'd own a piece of scrap metal. $3,843.00 total for a used 2005 engine, new water pump, master seals, miscellaneous. As my trusted mechanic told me, the problem is not unique to the Durango but occurs with any of the Chrysler/Dodge engines with a .7 in it (such as the 5.7 liter that I have) Everyone suggests a ... My Durango was still under the 7 year/70,000 mile warranty. Yes the exact same thing happened. THe valve stem broke and the rod dropped into the block. Have you ever got a response to your issue? I'm having the same problem with a 2004 Durango. Engine light on but no oil pressure problem(?)
thanks a lot my sun in lay found the connection not locking to gether and the looseness my cause arking caussing heat build doesnt seem to be getting as hot ill look to see if fan is dirty or plugged ill try to keep in touch thanks brian.
My next step would be to check the fan motor itself. If you're lucky, it may just be crudded up and in need of a good cleaning. At worst, you may need to replace it due to damaged wiring, insulation or whatnot. tidester, host SUVs and Smart Shopper
thanks for the info but i did replace with new resister fron the dealer and it started to get hot right away whats next.thanks
I think you'll need to replace the resistor pack. Melting leads means that too much current is flowing because the resistors can't handle the load. tidester, host SUVs and Smart Shopper
i am melting the first prong on my air conditioner fan motor resistor pack help thanks brian.
JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE OIL DOESNT MEAN YOU LIFTERS WONT TAP..THE COULD BE WORN OUT DEPENDING ON HOW OLD YOUR MOTOR IS OR HOW MANY MILES YOU HAVE....OR IT COULD BE OR VALVES RATTLING. FLUSH YOUR ENGINE WITH SEA FOAM AND IF THAT DOESNT HELP THEN YOU MAY NEED A VALVE JOB
My engine, when idling at a light or whatever, begins to knock. It sounds like the lifters are knocking. Also, my engine light is on. It has plenty of oil & the pressure, per the guage, is fine. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes I have the same problem with my 2005 Dodge Durango, the rattles are very loud and it seems to be coming from within the dashboard. Have you had a chance to get it looked at yet?
Michael, Did you get anyone to reply about your problem ? I am getting a similar problem with my 2005 Durango Limited. But it started when I replaced the battery after about 48,000 miles. The first problem was a low tire pressure light that stays on and then a week later the cargo lamp light stays on unles I go and open and close the rear hatch once or twice. Thanks, ... Read More
It's usually your clockspring that causes the problem. However, your safest bet is to have it checked out at the dealer. I'm a dodge tech and have seen a few of these come in for this.
where is the fuel filter for a 2005 dodge durango located?
Great information. I too have the EXACT problem on my 2005 SLT Hemi Durango. Been through all the "upgrades" now they replaced the instrument cluster as it was "posting" error codes??? Other symptoms for me have been airbag light on intermittently. How scary is that? I happend by a local Dodge dealer in my area and saw that they had a 2004 SLT brand new, never titled and loaded sitting on their lot. MSRP $39,105. They say they can "Let it go" for $28,000. Good deal or not? (2005's w/similiar options and special pricing still around 33,000) Any advantages or disadvantages to this deal, other than the 2004 its almost 2 years old. Thanks
Hemijeff - thanks so much for your input. Finalized purchase of Durango yesterday! Think I got a good deal, and am really enjoying driving it. Looking forward to my first trailering outing too. Thanks again. MBB
MBB; We haul a 27 ft travel trailer with a hemi powered Durango. It does a really great job for us and gets reasonable gas mileage pulling the 5500 lbs as well (12.) We are pushing the edge of optimum wheelbase vs trailer length where I would suspect you would not be. We use a reese weight distributing hitch and a reese friction anit- sway. Good luck!
Wow, you're getting 18 mpg in the city? Is that from the car computer or is that hand calculated? My 2004 Limited w/Hemi only gets 13 city (mixed street/expressway, and a tiny bit of freeway) and up to 20 highway (flats, less than 70 mph). However that's using the car computer - I did the math with a calculator and the car computer seems to be over generous by at least ... Read More

Check your state's Lemon Law. If there is a problem with this vehicle, and the dealer can't fix the problem, your vehicle has "diminished valve". Follow the "Lemon Law Process" in your state. does anyone know if the Durango will get the new variable displacement system now used on the Chrysler 300C, Dodge Magnum, and Jeep Grand Cherokee (2005) Hemi's?
