Love my Durango

2004 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD 4dr SUV (4.7L 8cyl 5A)
Review
This is my first SUV since a 1985 Chev Blazer disaster. (it lived up to its name and caught on fire) I have had several Dodge Ram trucks and have a 2004 regular cab now plus my Durango. This is my first 4 by 4 ever and so far I love it. It is by far the quietiest vehicle I have ever owned (and I have owned probably 45 new ones in my life time). I had a hemi in my Dodge Quad cab I traded in and really wanted a hemi but none were availabe so I settled for the 4.7 and am satisfied with it. . Since I don't tow, the 4.7 engine is more than adequate for this fine machine. It accelarates very well and runs smoothly.
Favorite Features
I love the all wheel drive and will find out how it does this winter when I go north. The 6-in-dash CD is great and the 384 watt amplifier provides wonderful sound. In my case I love the fold down seats so I can haul some things to the flea market but nice for family seating too.
Suggested Improvements
They could change the power window switch to a toggle instead of what is there now. (you have to lift it to get the window back down). The gas economy is not great but of course that depends on how you use your Durango and how heavy a foot you have. Outside mirrors need improvement.

My wife says I have an obessive compulsive disorder when it comes to shopping for new vehicles, but she had to admit it paid off this time! We both hate minivans but she is intimidated by HUGE SUV's. We drove Tahoes,Yukons,Expo's ect...and nothing seemed to work. Then we came across the Durango, right size, right price, and a HEMI!!! Driving it confirmed this was the vehicle for us! We've had it for a month now and it just gets better and better. The Hemi is getting 18MPG on the highway and the ride is awesome! I'm convinced this thing rides better than a Navigator! Did I mention the Hemi, the thing will spin the tires till the traction control kicks in. Tow's my 6000lb boat like nothing!
Favorite Features
memory seats for me an my wife, infinity stereo is great, towing capability is amazing, indiglo dash is cool, and that huge V-8 Hemi spewing out 335HP. I find myself seeking out kids in sports cars!
Suggested Improvements
Glovebox is to small, what about dual zone a/c? Hard to believe Dodge didn't put dual zone a/c in their top of the line SUV! They will probably see the error in their ways and put it in the 2006 model, I'm savin my pennies already!
I liked it so much I sold the Benz

My CLK 430 was in for service and the dealer gave me an 04 Durango loaner. As a car snob was I mad I could not get a Benz, but after about 10 minutes I really liked it, and it didn't even have a Hemi! After having it all weekend, I found it to be one of the best cars/SUV's I have ever driven. Two weeks later, I traded the Benz in on an 04 Limited (I did have to get the Hemi), and have loved it ever since. Before I bought it, I did test drive all the others, and they could not even come close to this car. The Hemi is a must, but don't test drive a Hemi with plans of getting the smaller engine, because you won't. Ride is great, POWER is the best and comfort could not be better.
Favorite Features
HEMI, with a Hemi, no other SUV even comes close to this monster. And I never have to respond to the "HEMI" question, they see the badge on the back when I leave 'em behind :-) Comfort, ride, radio, HEATED SEATS work great, it has all of the toys I had on the Benz! All for under 30K out the door!
Suggested Improvements
Loaner cars are a must. This is a great car, but if you want to change the Dodge image DaimerChrylser, you need to step-up in the service area. Make rear air bags std, and offer XM Radio, I dont like Sirius. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD AT LEAST A $500 A MONTH FUEL BILL-DON'T BUY THIS SUV!

This is my first Durango. I drove a 2001 a couple of years ago, and I liked it very much, however, a deal could not be made with the dealership, so I went and bought a used 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Replaced the front and rear differentials as the transfer case in one year. Drove the 2004 Durango, love how it performs (despite the not so great mileage), and needless to say, I'm extremely happy!
Favorite Features
Handling, style, and comfort

Interior gauge panel should not be white.

Before buying, I compared the Expedition to the Durango. The Durango beat the Expedition in almost all categories, especially power. This being my first Dodge,I was pleasantly surprised to find features usually only found on luxury vehicles such as memory driver settings, climate control, and leather. And, most important, the price was reasonable.
Favorite Features
Hemi engine, 3.92 rear end ratio, steering wheel cruise and radio controls and its attractive exterior and interior.
Suggested Improvements
The running boards could use some type of splash guard protection front and rear.
well worth it

I traded in my 2003 dodge durango for the 2004 one. I have had a lot of problems with it since. I had to have the battery replaced already and it only has 5000 miles. The check engine light came on so I took it to the dealership, they say they can't find anything wrong with it. It shakes really bad when idling. The noise level is deafening. It sounds like your in a helicopter with 1 window rolled down driving 60mph. My car shakes when you get up on speed driving down the highway. There is no problem with traveling in this SUV. I do kinda wish that I didn't trade my 2003 durango in, I never had any problems with it. Maybe it will grow on me.
Favorite Features
The interior, infinity sound system, comfort and room is a great plus. I have 3 large dogs that we take a lot of places and there is plenty of room for all of them, me and my husband.
Suggested Improvements
I would improve the gas mileage and the side mirrors. The mirrors need to be larger for a large SUV. The windows could be tinted darker because it gets hot in the car due to having gray interior.

this is our second durango, after a loaded slt 2001, that was not as comfortable or smooth riding as we liked, however in 40,000 miles it never was in the shop except for routine maintenance, we decided to order a hemi powered SLT, what a change, other than dodge reliability nothing is the same, talk about improvement, wow, smooth riding, comfortable, unbelievable power, awsome sound system, its a whole new world, and the fit & finish is the best we have ever had in dozens of new cars, I am 63 my wife 65, I sold new Fords & Chevrolets for 35 years, and the new 04 Durango is the absolute best vehicle we have ever owned
Favorite Features
hemi V/8, quality build, comfort, smoothness, sound system [up- graded 6 CD changer with high watt su- woofer] fit & finish

all SUV owners in this size complain about the mileage, we are no different, but the 2004 durango gets better mileage than our 2001 durango did & yet we have a 100 more horsepower, sure we would like better mileage, but we are not complaining, considering how much we love this vehicle
Limited with a HEMI? Hooray!

Just bought the Durango Limited with the HEMI: Hooray! I drove a Ford Explorer XLT and a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo: neither car matches up to this SUV. The older Ford (1999) was bumpy like a truck, no third row seat, but had great storage capacity. The Jeep was so narrow that we could barely fit two full-sized people in the back seat with the child safety seat in the middle. And a tiny trunk area: two golf bags at the most and the clubs only just fit between the wheels. But this Durango? Excellent! The ride is great, the power is awesome, there's a comfortable third row and I can take my most chubby friends and relatives anywhere with the kid's car seat between them! Great SUV!
Favorite Features
Power, smooth ride, great handling, wide running boards, distinctive look.
Suggested Improvements
Make it bigger! That way anybody can sit in the back seats and stretch out their legs.

The ride is much better than I expected. Love the towing capacity and cargo room. Long trips are very comfortable. HEMI is smooth and powerful, helpful for passing and towing.

Suggested Improvements
Better side visability. Better quality plastic materials in dash, door panels. Floor shift rather than on column. Xenon headlights.
