First off, was it a 4wd or 2wd? What was the mileage? Actually, many of us do have a clue about this. The problem on some first generation Durangos was due to upper ball joints that allowed moisture to enter the joint, displace the grease, and eventually wear out the dry joint (somewhat quickly). The recall was issued around 2005 or 2006 for 2000 - 2003 models, but only 4wd. The ... Read More
I purchased my 2002 Dodge Durango in the summer of 2009. 5.9, SLT - fully loaded to the max, I also even added flowmasters and thru in a KN filter. Beautiful truck!! BUT...(and I paid for cash for it also) - This SUV spent more time on a flat-bed getting towed then it did on the road with me behind the wheel. It would not start - I had to replace ... Read More
Did you ever find a solution to this problem? My 2002 Durango just started having the same issue. Thank you.

It overheats when it sees fit i had a flush hoses checked waterpump replaced , and a part no one even a dodge dealership never new existed called the auxillary pump many people have had success with replacing that I ... I currently own a 2007 Honda Ridgeline RTL. I have previously owned a 2002 Dodge Durango R/T, which I traded off in 2007. I have regretted that decision ever since. I traded the Durango for a Toyota Tundra, which I in turn traded for the Ridgeline. I am very happy with my Ridgeline, but the payments are killing me. I recently decided to consider trading off the Ridgeline for something cheaper, ... Read More
The AC in my 2002 Dodge Durango SLT Plus only works at the highest speed. From the posts I see pretty clearly that it is the blower motor resistor that is most likely the cause. The posts say that there are two screws located just to the left of the blower fan. For the life of me I can not find these screws. Any diagrams out there to assist me in ... Read More
About 2 months ago, our Dodge Durango began making a vibrating type noise when on but only when idling. This noise disappears when one of two things happen (1 when I am moving, or two when I turn off the AC). Anyone else had this issue with a Dodge and know what it could be?
Hi Mike here. I ended up troubleshooting the engine cooling system as a whole. I discovered the electric fan was not working, and the engine coolant temperature sensor was below the minimum specification. So I flushed the radiator, replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor, the thermostat and installed a new electric fan. So far the check engine light has not come back on and it is running like a champ. Turns ... Read More
I love the internet. My 2002 Durango 4.7L w/auto trans, is doing the same thing right now... only sometimes but the frequency has increased recently. Symptoms: Sometimes, when the vehicle is started it sounds like the motor is racing and it wont shift out of first gear. After a few moment to a minute or two it goes away and all is normal and without symptom. So yesterday the battery died ... Read More
If it shuts off again look at your mileage and see if 'no bus' comes in that window. If so it is your PCM unfortunately That is how I found out why mine shut off so much. Many disconnect the battery for about five minutes and it starts back up but that doesn't work for all. It has to cool down before it starts again. Another thing it could be is ... Read More
2002 DODGE DURANGO,check engine light was not reset by previous owner when heads were replaced.I need a smog check in order to register(CA>).Are there any temporary solutions?
Thank you for your reply..........I have called a few Dodge Dealerships in the area (for the record, the dealership that I bought this from wasn't a Dodge dealership and......let's just say that I doubt that the techs there could put a "Mr. Potato Head" together, let alone fixing a vehicle) Needless to say, the service guys I did speak with about this from Dodge seemed baffled, one DID suggest it could ... I have a 1998 durango the battery went dead ,we charged battery now all it does is spin over it want fire up. the gas gauge and radio isnt working
The shutting off and not starting for several minutes is possibly your computer (sorry) Basically the pcm shuts down and cools off then will restart. Many people wiggle the wire at the PCM and found ti will re-start. Dodge put a bad computer in these model durangos and will not recall it despite thousands and thousands with the same issue. You can possibly find one online much cheaper though that has ... Read More
I bought this 2002 Durango 5.9 Magnum engine - 4 months ago with 81,000 miles on it, I put just over 4,000 since. It was running great, one day though, and this is my own fault, I ran out of gas. Since then this truck stalls without any warning while driving. It;s happened more then I can count! I replaced the fuel cap, I heard it could be a sensor, fuel ... Read More
Awesome! I'll try that. Thanks for the tip.
Mine was doing the same thing. First thing my mechanic said was "transmission". Turned out to be the fan making that noise. The clutch for the fan was seized up. $65.00 for a new one.
No, sorry I haven't figured anything out as of yet.
rockpin, My 2002 Durango is doing the same thing, accept on occasionally it doesn't like to shift right away. Have you found anything out regarding this issue? Regards
Can anyone help? When my Durango has been idling awhile, upon acceleration, the engine makes an abnormal revving sound. The sound will stop when I reach normal driving speed. It always shifts on time, but the noise is similar to a transmission low on fluid. I'm leaning towards a vacuum issue. I've replaced the purge solenoid, replaced trans. filter and fluid, and did a visual check for vacuum leaks with no ... Read More

My 2002 Durango has power windows. I had rolled down the driver side window and when I pushed the button to roll it back up, the whole window dropped down into the door. did you ever get an answer on this? I'm having the exact same problem. Changed the battery now can't get the tire pressure light or cargo lamp light to go off.
Did adjusting the latch fix the low tire pressure indicator as well?

Jim, I am having the same problem with my 06 Durango. We replaced the battery and the tire pressure and cargo lamp lights are on. How did you fix this problem? Thanks, Brad
Michael, Did you get anyone to reply about your problem ? I am getting a similar problem with my 2005 Durango Limited. But it started when I replaced the battery after about 48,000 miles. The first problem was a low tire pressure light that stays on and then a week later the cargo lamp light stays on unles I go and open and close the rear hatch once or twice. Thanks, ... Read More
I have 2002 Durango and have similiar sounds...my mechanic replaced an exhaust gasket on the driver's side and that seemed to make the noise go away. I was surprised because, like you, I was certain that it was a valve, push rod, or bearing gone bad. Same symptom....noisey when it started and tended to lessen as engine warmed up. Mechanic explained that the gasket would leak while engine was cold then ... Read More

We just purchased a 2002 Dodge durango and found that it had a warning lamp for the "Cargo Lamp" that would blink occasionally. I looked in the manual and it had no reference to the "cargo lamp" which is located on the bottom right 2nd lamp on the instrument warning cluster. Could someone point me in the right direction to get this fixed. Thank You, Michael
I haven't been very active in the Durango forum and that came with reason: I didn't have many problems to discuss in the forum! I had a 2002 Durango R/T which I loved, however I bought a car in January and really didn't need a SUV anymore, so I traded off my Durango for a Toyota Tundra. So far I miss the space of the Durango, but overall I'm happy with ... Read More

I have a 1999 Durango w/5.9 Liter v8. Our truck did the same thing and other problems(engine light, abs, etc). After a thorough witch-hunt by rookie mechanics, a senior Dodge man in Az replaced the computer. No problems ever since after 152,000 miles.
I know exactly how your feeling with your Durango. I have the same exact problem. The "D" has been in the shop four times and they say it is an electrical problem. So far they have tested every wire and cable and nothing. I have been doing research as my "D" is now in there again. I have been reading on DodgeTalk and Dodge Durango site that it could be a ... Hi. My 2004 is doing the same thing. Weird to see the dash lights and locks go wild when I open the door. The battery died today and attempting to start only brings severe clicking noise from the engine bay. Did you get a solution?
Did you ever figure out what this problem was because my 2001 did the same thing. My 2003 Durango is doing the exact same thing. Have you figured out what it was yet? Please say you did. I went to the dealership, and they were no help. They just wanted me to leave it there for an expensive diagnostic test. I would greatly appreciate your response. Thank you, Scott

I had a 2002 Durango and loved it, while finding it a bit pedestrian. We are looking for an SUV to be a combination family hauler and tow vehicle, towing 5500+ pounds several times a year, including over mountain passes. I have been looking seriously at Durangos, but am extremely alarmed at reports of "sludge buildup" engine failures and brakes/ABS so bad they cause rear-end crashes.
