Fuel Economy

12 - 14 mpg

Summary

What Edmunds.com says

A serious SUV, down to its stout towing ability, generous cargo room, unyielding ride and abysmal fuel economy.

Pros

Aggressive styling, large interior, powerful 5.9-liter V8.

Cons

5.2-liter V8's power disappointing, interior squeaks, wind noise.

What's New for 2000

The next-generation 4.7-liter V8 is now available on four-wheel-drive models and is linked to an all-new automatic transmission. Rack-and-pinion steering becomes standard for both two- and four-wheel-drives. A performance-oriented R/T model has been added to the lineup that already includes the SLT and the decked-out SLT Plus.

Review

Bought when my kids were young and I couldn't drive a mini van. At 96K only a water pump has gone bad. I've taken good care of it though, bu it has chewed thru 3 sets of tires. Otherwise it runs every time and the 360 V8 sounds and feels great. I use it to pull my motorbike around. Taking it to the state park next March with the entire family. It'll be "the car" we all remember. Tough, American, strong and heavy. Dependable and true.

Favorite Features

360 V8 hums. Seats 7, pulls hard. Safe vehicle. Big box frame 4800 lbs dry, nice to have that iron w/ air bags around you.

Suggested Improvements

More sophisticated suspension. Old school leafs in back, iron arms in front.

Review

I have had my R/T for 10 years and it has 210,000 miles. Other than a new trans at 165,000, we have conducted normal required maintenance. Its been undercoated twice and has zero rust. We love this truck and it will never be part of the C.A.R.S (clunker) program. Let gas be $7 per gal, we will continue to drive it.

Favorite Features

Power, and the aftermarket satt radio installed in 2002.

Review

Bought this truck in 2006 with 60K. Currently at 84K. I have replaced the AC evaporator & compressor, PS pump, brake lines (rust), brake pads & rotors. I run synthetic oil (change at 3K) and trans fluid and have had none of the sludge problems that I read about. It has a full tow package and I pull a 20ft travel trailer. I love driving this truck - it does anything I need it to do and is easy to drive in traffic. I just wish the fuel mileage was better. I have gotten as high as 16 on the highway @ 55mph w/o the trailer (12 @ 70mph) but drops to 7 w/trailer. In town is 8-9. I would love to see if I could get the Hemi with cyl deactivation retrofitted to this truck.

Favorite Features

Styling, R/T package, excellent towing ability in a package smaller than the QE2, great handling and ride for a 4x4 full frame truck.

Suggested Improvements

Fuel mileage, AC designed for a pickup not an SUV (rear vent windows would help), poor AC evaporator design, poor fuel mileage, premium fuel requirement (I think this changed in later R/T's but should be taken seriously in the 2000), poor fuel mileage, and did I mention the fuel mileage?

Review

I purchased a 2000 dodge durango as a certified used truck. It came with a warranty . It hav been 5 years and I have not put one dime into this truck (excluding reg. maint) untill today. I have recently purchased a new warranty with U.S fidells and today I am replacing the evaporator (121000 miles.) Great truck very dependable.poor gas mileage. well built and fun to drive. It could very well run forever with the new warranty.covered until 210000 miles.

Favorite Features

4x4, interior comfort ,powerfull engine, dependability.

Suggested Improvements

making the engine more fuel efficient, better gas mileage

Review

Bought my Durango new and have put 118,000 miles on it. I tow a bass boat, drive across dove fields, take trips and drove it to work. One constant problem is the front rotors are good for 16 months and 21,000 miles. Then they have to be replaced. Looking for a rotor solution. The truck otherwise has performed well. My wife and I enjoy driving it on a trip as the ride is comfortable, solid, quiet and I can pass anybody any time. I don't get those who complain about the gas mileage ? All Fords, Chevy's etc get 14 mpg or less. I get 14 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the road. I plan to drive it till the wheels fall off

Favorite Features

Plenty of room for hunting dog, guns, life jackets, decoys, etc. The Fold up door keeps the rain off of you while loading. Does a good job towing the boat and the ride is steady. Been caught in a few storms and I felt safe. After 8 years still has a good paint job can't say that about GM products.

Suggested Improvements

Dodge trucks need larger rotors, and a better overall brake system. To light for the weight of this truck. For a truck used for hunting and fishing the interior is good. Dodge customer service could be better, alot better.
