When you move it into D..does it drop in rpm first and then stall..or stall immediately as you move the gear shift? Have you tried moving it from park to neutral..what does it do in neutral? If you pull the 4WD unit's fuse, it will not engage, so no matter what state it is in (or what the 4WD encoder in the unit thinks it's in) nothing happens until you put the +12 volt fuse back in which starts the process all over again. It's hard to diagnose what the situation is with your 4WD transfer case. From your description, there has to be an anomaly where the power available to the transfer case is controlling the electric motor that engages the 4WD unit. Something is obvious not in a proper state (engage/disengage) and if that is the case..the PCM which is still energized even with the ignition switch off, can be receiving a incorrect ... Read More
It is odd. I did try turning the engage knob off several times, but a few days later, it will start doing it again. I pulled the 25 amp fuse out for serveral months, and the engagement noise went away. I put the fuse back in and it is back, but this time, I am sometimes getting a 4wd fail light while driving with the fuse in.

the truck is an automatic and has 99,000 miles on the unit. The article just mentioned is very informitive. Thank you for that, but mentions it is for 2004 and older. You didn't mention the model and I assume you have the automatic transmission with your 4x4..in which case you will hav either the NV233HD or NV244HD transfer case, both are electronically shifted by the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module)...so you may have a selector switch (dash) or mode sensor issue, that needs replacing on the encoder motor in the transfer case. I thought it some more about your transmission problem, and there has to be more to this story than what you have described here. The transmission downshifting from O/D to 3rd is a normal occurrance and should not lock up the rear wheels as you have described, causing you to lose control. That is very strange to have an erratic downshift on top of a hill climb that forced a downshift like that from 0/D to 3rd. With no codes available and the truck disabled and the diagnostic connector hooked up afterwards, any codes that might have been there maybe were gone? I don't understand what you mean "goes up to 2 1/2 when I first start it and idles down the road" If you have the 46re transmission with the shift solenoid, the PCM will shift from 1st to 2nd around 2500 rpm, then from 2nd to 3rd around 2200rpm. Need more specific info. Is this a V6 or a V8? You didn't mention if this was a 4x4 or a 2wd, but the codes the way I'm interpret them is p0700 (TCM transmission Control Module) is a transmission control system malfunction. grumpymike1, I have a 2006 Dodge Dakota that I have only owned for a month. I took it back to the dealership three times for exactly the problem you're describing. I was sure it was having serious transmission problems. In the end they told me that's just the way the Dakota's act in the morning when you first shift into gear it hesitates. How long have you owned your truck?

Thank you for replying to the message srs. That does make sense to me in regards to the way the ABS is functioning. I didn't realize it was rear only ABS. I am accustomed to a sedan with ABS and it was totally different. This really helped out a lot and thank you for replying. Matt
Doesn't the ABS only work on the rear brakes? So the front wheels can still lock up, but at least the light back end won't come around on you. At least that's the theory.

My 2005 Dodge Dakota 4x4 V6 also started shifting in and out of 4wd by itself and doing it when even the engine is off. My shop said the Front Control Module "probably" needs to be replaced. I had a similar problem that requires replacing the multifunction switch / stalk in the steering column (see message 416-419). Here are websites for disassembling the steering column and replacing the switch unit. I second thaqt opionion..... the factory brake rotors are junk. Why waste your time having the dealership install the same junk? I went thru factory rotors and some expensive "powerslot" rotors too. This is what the powerslot looked like after 3 winters. Now, I have the Raybestos / Bendix rotors installed on my dakota. In my opinion as long as you have factory brakes on there you are guarenteed to have problems. My buddy who used to work at a dealership swears DC can't design proper truck brakes if its life depended on it. The 05/06 Dakota "shimmy-shimmy-shake" is a widely reported issue, with numerous dealers making many varied attempts to resolve the problem. I've yet to hear of anyone coming across the true solution to this issue.

My 2005 Dakota has a rattle noise in the front dash on passenger side. Sounds similar to a loose screw vibrating, wobbling, snapping sound. This noise sounds as if the spare tire is loose and banging on the bottom of the pickup bed. Somewhat of a hollow thumping noise. Checked brake cables under bed, they seem tight. Too bad that you got a truck that you are not happy with, I got my 2005 Dakota Laramie Q Cab on May 2and I have the 4.7L engine and 3:55 posi rear, On my first tank of gas I got 16.88mpg, this truck is nice and quiet rides and handles better than my 2001 and 2004 Q Cab, I have the P265X70R16 tires, :)
Purchased a 2005 Dodge Dakota based on Edmunds recommendation. STAY AWAY FROM THIS VEHICLE It rides worse than any cheap rental car I've ever driven. Dealer replaced tires, I paid the difference, still vibrates at highway speeds. Gas mileage rating 16-22mpg, would you believe 13.9 mpg highway. Dealer states gas quality is poor. I had a 2000 Toyota Tundra V8 that averaged 16.5 - 17.
