As far as the engine stalling on you in a random fashion...it could really be anything... such as: - fuel pump pressure intermittent/fuel pump relay or circuit -engine timing sensor (camshaft or crankshaft)..both of these ... By the way, I have a son that is currently serving with the US Army in Iraq. He's in the northern sector of Bhagdad. I went to the Dodge web page and from what I can tell the 2004 2WD Dakota Quad Cab will come standard with a conventional differential in the corporate 8.25 axle, 3.55 ratio. Despite plugging in different combinations, it looks like the 3.55 axle ratio is standard ... Read More

Received the copy of "Dodge Magazine" for Dodge owners. There's a photo of the 2004 Dakota, and it looks exactly like the 2003 to me. Don't know what, if any, interior changes were made, but the headlights, grill etc seem to be the same. Now, the Durnago was changed to reflect the Ram's appearance and looks pretty good.

Dusty, your opinion is informed, and I read your notes with interest. I don't doubt that the 3.9 can be tweaked for zip, but if zip I want, I'll get the more modern design in the 4.7. Speed from the stoplight isn't a concern. I'm more likely to annoy the folks behind me with a light foot on the gas pedal. The new 3.6 for 2004 interests me (cheap dog that ... Read More

I am anxious to learn more about the 2004 Dakota and wanted to know if anyone watching this vehicle board knows when we might see some official literature? I have been looking at the Dakota as my "next" vehicle for 5 months now...but there are a few changes I would like to see before I purchase. First, as a Jeep Grand Cherokee owner, I think the interior needs a drastic update. ... Read More

Dodge Dakota with crew cab (or 3 door/forward facing door, comfortable Ext. cab) 4.7 V8 Manual 6'3" box   I like the power of the 4.7, the room of the quad, and the turning radius of the Dakota but I just can't convince myself that the 5'3" bed will be as useful as a full 6'3" bed. I am hoping that with this new 10" longer chassis that it might share with ... Read More

I have 3 Dakotas, 1993, 1996, 1997, and all purchased new . These trucks are very good trucks and I was disappointed to hear that the new 2004 Dakota was to be downsized. Is this true? or is that comment based on the fact that the Durango which is based on the Dakota chassis going up size next year, and the Dakota will remain, "smaller"? Dodge started the mid size idea, ... Read More

I drove a regular cab short box Ram 1500 with a HEMI in it this weekend, it also had the 20" wheels and a 3.92 rear with limited slip. What an awesome motor. I made a few spirited runs between stoplights and on the interstate. The motor is very smooth and the exhaust sound makes you want to give it more gas just to hear its song! That was the good ... The 2004 Dakota is supposed to actually shrink in size a bit, but I think there's still talk of a Hemi. Check it out, if you haven't already. -TB

Unless they continue the old body style past its demise date, the 2003 models will be the last of the Dakotas. They killed the 2004 Dakota because it got too close to the size of the 1/2 ton. Since the Durango and Dakota share everything, the Dakota got enlarged because they wanted to up the size of the 2004 Durango. Personally, I would like them dump the current half-ton and make the ... I can only offer some recounting on the 4.7 (287) engine. Like many other Chrysler engines, the 4.7 appears to take longer to break-in. After break-in they are very efficient, as Bpeebles commented. But so far I've found them to be strong, durable, and exceptionally reliable engines. I've talked to a few owners with 80K plus, and one with 110K, and they reported absolutely zero problems. Even the dirty fuel injector ... Read More

My posting today will reveal that my truck is actually a 2004 model SLT with a 4.7 V-8 engine. My control panel inside the truck does not offer a 2WD option, but AWD and 2 4WDs.
