Hi Everyone, I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, 3.9L, 6 cyl. I was told I need a new catalytic converter which is located under my driver's seat. I can hear the rattling, especially when backing up. Why do I have 2 CATs and are there more? I know some Dakotas have 3. If I have 3, where is the third ones location? Now, my question is, "how do I ... Read More

I am now on my fourth shift motor for my 2001 Dodge Dakota. Next time, I plan to replace it myself. Can you describe where it is? Or send me a picture to oldbow9634@msn.com Thanks.
I have never had the dash off of this truck. Knock on wood it now has 323,000 miles and it is running really good. I would love to get my moneys worth out of it. Oh i did buy it new. :) But seriously, can you put that in shade tree terms. Where are the VACUUM lines? Are they behind the control panel I would assume? and you also said vacuum-signal. ... I posted a question in post #202, My ignition switch was in fact bad. My truck started fine and ran fine, but the blower wasn't running. The tumblers were good. The truck didn't have to be rekeyed, but the cheap ignition switch module did have to be replaced. It works fine now. D.P.
Have you tried replacing the blower motor resistor (BMR)? It's about $15.00 here in the comfy, summer temperatues of San Antonio. I was vactioning during the summer in New MX and Colorado when mine went out. At first it blew warm air. Then the speed significantly reduced on my blower fan. Eventually, High speed just quit. 5th update: 2001 dodge dakota/5.9/46re: the lockup converter has returned to its old habit and won't lockup at highway speeds. Even if you have some air in the system, that would not explain the loss of coolant. How much coolant have you had to add ... Read More

Glad to hear you had good success. Punky Throttle Position Sensors aren't the problem they use to be, but the 2001s and 2002s seem to have higher replacement rates.Defective TPSs can really drive a 545RFE a crazy. Best regards, Dusty
Obviously you have not purged out all of air from the hydrolic system. Did you allow it to run totally dry (Air got in)? If so, then you may need to perform special steps to get the air out of the ABS pump and accumulator. Also, what technique did you use to bleed the system? 1) Pressure-bleeding? 2)Vacuum-bleeding? 3) Manual pump-the-pedal process?

Just a thought, but you may have a loose exhaust system. Check the condition of the exhaust system clamps. In the Northeast, they have a tendency to rust away after a while and loosen up. Although this usually causes rattling noisdes over bumps and stuff, on mine I would occasionally hear a sound that I would label as "ringing." I've gotta say, the clamp Dodge uses is pretty robust. Hmmm, the 2001-2004 Dakotas only had one muffler. What you might be referring to is a resonator, but again, those were not used from '01-04. I don't know if the '05 and up got a resonator. I do know the exhaust system is a little different on newer models. Best regards, Dusty
No, you do not need to reset the PCM after replacing the TPS. However, if after replacing the TPS things are still not right, try disconnecting the battery for two minutes and try it again. Sometimes the Transmission Control Module (TCM) will keep compensating for a TPS problem (Throttle Position Out of Range) and run the computer adaptive algorithm all the way to the end of its value. This can give ... Read More

Battery issues will cause some pretty quirky problems in Dakotas, everything from losing the time on the clock or presets in the radio, random chimes, rough idle, and irratic transmission problems. The IOD fuse probably isn't labeled. It isn't on my 2003, either. It is a ten ampere fuse, usually, and on later Daks it's found in cavity 18. But check all of the fuses just to be sure. Thank-you for the replay. The battery was replaced (2) years ago, so that should be fine. However, it is due for a tranmission fluid change so that may be a good place to start. Dusty is correct. The 5.2L (318ci) was replaced with the 4.7L semi-hemi in the 2000 model year. I do not think it is possible for your 2001 to have a 5.2L from the factory.
