ABS specific code 51 is REAR ISOLATION SOLENOID OPEN. this is applicable to Dodge RWAL..it has nothing to do with any kind of relay. Looking at the the 2000 wiring diagram for RWAL brakes, there is NO relay associated with the CAB. I checked the PDC on my 1998 Dakota and confirmed this, The CAB is fused by a 40amp fuse in the PDC. So obviously if the lights are coming ... Read More
Need more specific info. Is this a V6 or a V8? You didn't mention if this was a 4x4 or a 2wd, but the codes the way I'm interpret them is p0700 (TCM transmission Control Module) is a transmission control system malfunction. Couldn't find the p0876 code ..are you sure you read the code right? The dakota doesn't have a transaxle, if it's a 4x4 it will have a transfer case ... Read More
Consulted my Haynes Durango/Dakota 1998/99 Repair manual. This book has saved me tons of cash, both in "Check engine" diagnosis and troubleshooting electrical and electrical sensor problems. I highly recommend this manual..it is a worthwhile investment if you are capable of doing some basic repairs yourself. The manual mentioned that there is a shift cable that connects the throttle at the air horn (located on the other side of the TPS ... Read More
I have the same problem with my 1998 Dakota 5.2L (318 V8 (105,000 km) and with the overdrive transmission. It seems to get worse if the transmission is heated up after a 30-40 minute highway drive. The shifting is delayed and the tach goes up to 3000 rpm and the shift is hard to second and also to 3rd. Overdrive (once in) seems to be fine. According to my Haynes manual, ... Read More
I have a 1998 dodge dakota, with the 3.9, 4 x 4. I went to leave a couple of days ago out of my drive way and it barely made it up the hill, then it basically came to a complete stop when I turned the corner after losing momention. The truck will not move in any gear. Everyone says I need a new transmission, but I dont see how all ... Read More
My 1998 Dodge Dakota will start fine, let it sit a few days and the battery is drained. It can be jump started. It has a new battery and alternator.
I've been searching for weeks online for an answer to this issue I'm having so I'll try here and see what I get for an answer since dustyk seems to be direct and to the point. My son couldn't make payments on his 1998 4x4 Dakota SLT with a 3.9 and auto and 104,000 miles, so I took it over figuring it would be good to move our boat from the ... Read More
Also, very recently, I've sprayed WD-40 all over and around my rubbers and bushings (i see a joke there, but I can't place it) which helped the squeaks for a bit. I don't think I came close to the computer at all. My truck does have 310K miles on it. The guy at the car rental place said he had a buddy that wanted to sell his 80's model Chevy for ... Read More
I wasn't in a good area of town btw. I think they call the area.. Dallas if I'm not mistaken..HA I went back to the hotel and ate my stale cookie. Yum. Howdy everybuddy!! I have a dodge dakota with a world of hurt. Let me tell ya'll a story... I've just had (2 weeks ago) a "quieter" muffler put on my 'Kota so as not to wake up my neighbors any more. First off I have given great advice from being a owner of the hideous 1998 buick regal ls. Just bought this truck yesterday and in desperate need of help. After doing some searching on the net I changed the Speed Sensor and Nuetral Park Sensor on tranny NO ... Read More
I'm in need of a replacement "Parking Brake Cable Tensioner" (MOPAR part# 52008437AB) for my 1998 Dodge Dakota. I've been to my local Dodge dealer and I've been told that this part is no longer being produced and is not available. This part was used during model years 94-99 on both Dakotas and Durangos. Can anyone help? Any suggestions (aside from junkyards)? Thanks Roger
Don't know if anyone knows the answer, but I'm real curious. When I was 19 years old, I special ordered a 1998 Dodge Dakota. I ordered what I could afford: regular cab, 2wd, 5 speed manual, no power or A/C. But what I did order was the 5.2L engine. This was a half year before the R/T existed. I still have the truck. It has 58,000 miles on it. My question ... Read More

1998 Dodge Dakota, 4-Cylinder, Stock I recently noticed that during the cooling cycles the car goes through from going to ~210 down to ~185 (when the radiator fan is on), a significant amount of steam (I think) is produced from the radiator. I initially noticed this when I turned off my car and got out to see steam coming from the grill. It is not enough to see when the car ... Read More

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 5.2, 2wd, 160k miles with an automatic transmission. For quite some time I've been noticing a shift quality issue that only occurs between 2nd and 3rd gear when the transmission is cold. When the tranny is cold, and the weather is cool, the engine revs quite high for quite a while before the truck will shift from 2nd into 3rd gear. the colder the weather, ... Read More

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota. The air conditioning blows so cold, it will run you right out of the truck. Then, it blows ambient temp air and is useless. I have replaced the cycling switch, the refrigerant, checked for leaks with dye, replaced the high pressure switch, the control head and the vacuum harness that connects to the back of the switch. It works when started and then after varying ... Read More
My 1998 Dakota Club Cab started going bald a couple of years ago (2006 or so) and now has great balding patches on the hood, roof, "A" pillars and tops of the fenders. It got a new catalytic converter (2 actually) free from Daimler Chrysler, so I was wondering if there is any action with them concerning the paint jobs?

Hey, I am a 16 year old high school student thinking about buying a 1998 Dodge Dakota from a friend for 3000 dollars. Sounded like an excellent deal, the only problem is theres a whopping 170,000 miles on it. Right now it's running great for him, no problems. Just wondering if it would be a good deal to buy it, and if so then how long can I count on it ... Read More

You did not mention the specific engine you have but any of the serp belts I have replaced were easy to install by placing a wrench on the center bolt of the tensionor pully and using that as leverage to hold the pulley as the belt was 'threaded' into place. jhorl, you must be careful of making assumptions based on the color of the coolant. My 2003 Dakota also has a green-colored coolant, but it is definitely HOAT - Hybrid Organic Additive Technology. This is available from Chrysler or Dodge dealers as Mopar # MS-9769 (Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant, Five-year/100,000 Mile Formula). Chrysler appears to be unique in the industry at this time by using hybrid coolants in some of their vehicles. Most ... Read More

I have to agree with the criticism of Dodge & Jeep. I made the mistake of buying a 1996 Dodge Caravan (bought new) AND a 1998 Dodge Dakota extra cab (bought new). The many problems include: Caravan: transmission failure @ 90,000 miles bad engine noises serious brake problems both front & rear Dakota: transmission failure @ 60,000 miles bad engine noises suspension problems Jeep Wrangler (bought new in 1988) engine failure ... Hi: I heard a rumour that Dodge has issued a recall on transfer cases for Dakota's 1998 and older. I checked the NHTSA website to no avail. Anyone else hear this rumour, and if so, can you provide details? Thanks Rick
(pikeamania) I have been following the Dakota since mid 1999. I still follow all of the Dakota forums here at Edmunds as well as at several other sites. The 4.7L V8 Hemi has been almost infallible since its inception in the 1998 JeepGrandCherokee. As for the chassis itself... the reported problems have been well within what is seen on other vehicles. Lets look at your own words... "Everyone seems to have ... Read More
The overhead console on Dodges is not to be trusted. I recently got "18.4 MPG" on a two-day highway trip over the Rocky Mountains an a 1998 Durango 5.9 3.55. I VERY MUCH doubt that is accurate. If you want better accuracy, take down how much you put in at the pump, reset the trip odo and calculate from there. Long live Dakota!
On April Fools Day 2000 (no kidding) I purchased a 98 Dodge Dakota Sport with 29000 miles that included the original as well as a transferable extended warranty.
