EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

RATING Overall

A unique new model, the Dodge Caliber earns points for clever features, but can't overcome issues with build quality and merely adequate powertrain options.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

RATING Dynamics

Handling and steering are sound, but not thrilling. Acceleration isn't the Caliber's strong point, even in the R/T with the 2.4-liter engine -the largest of the three choices. The optional continuously variable transmission, offered instead of a traditional automatic, doesn't impress. For those living in snow country, all-wheel drive is available.

RATING Comfort

The ride is well-damped, but R/T versions are firmer than expected. Somewhat overstuffed front seats have soft padding, but elbow room is a bit tight on the door side --especially for taller occupants. The rear seat would be better if it had more leg room.

RATING Function

The basic interior layout is quite good, with the major controls well-placed and easy to use. There are numerous clever features as well, such as a flip-out iPod holder and a chilled glove-box comparment. Rearward visibilty is a slight weakness, as the shape of the body and large rear seat headrests impede the view.

RATING Design/Build Quality

The Caliber has a distinctive look that tries to project a tough image. The interior design is pleasant and functional, but certain versions bring the exterior body color inside and apply it to the seats and dashboard, which can look weird if you buy an orange one. By far the Caliber's weakest point is the low-grade look and feel of the interior panels, as well as oversized gaps and misalignments, inside and out.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Economical Transportation

Considering equipment and capability, the Caliber can be a reasonably priced choice. A bare-bones Base version, devoid of roll-up windows, A/C, and other power features, is available.

Daily Commuter

The Caliber is a good go-to-work machine, with competent steering and handling, useful features to help the driver pass the time, and reasonable, if not stellar, fuel economy.
