Re: volvo XC90 Don't buy one [boardmas]

My wife bought a 2007 XC90 3.2 FWD base model on 17 Apr 2007 and as of 18 Apr 2008 the odometer recorded 9266 miles. The vehicle has consumed 497.6 gal of gasoline (premium 91 octane AKI) giving an average of 18.6 mpg in combined driving, mostly city with a lot of short trips, but including one long mostly interstate trip of 1550 miles over which we averaged 23.2 mpg. The Michelin 4x4 Synchrone tires (never been rotated), size 235/65-17, have no unusual wear, but appear to have about 5 mm of tread left in front and 7 mm in rear. (I just used a mm ruler.) I inflate them to 40 psi cold (tire sidewall states 51 psi max infl pressure). We may have them swapped front-to-rear, same-side, because we don't get them rotated frequently enough to prevent a set due to long term unchanging rotation direction. We get about 15 mpg straight city and maximum of 24-25 mpg highway when driven carefully for fuel economy on level interstate highway at 65-75 mph, hand calculated from pump volumes and trip odometer readings. Repeated comparisons of the computer results show that the computer gives an mpg which is 4.0 % higher than that calculated from the fuel pump volume readings. The new EPA estimates for the XC90 3.2 fuel use are about the same as the Acura MDX, BMW X5, and other similiar vehicles. We find the XC90 very comfortable on trips with our 3 dogs. The only deficiency was that the CD player didn't work and the dealer replaced it, I think upgrading to the multi disc player at no charge to us because the first new (single disc) player also didn't work for them in the shop. We never use the CD player. So far in 2008 we have travelled 2118 mi on 118.8 gal giving 17.8 mpg with no long highway trips. Every couple of weeks we take a local highway trip of about 150 miles.
here is my deal for an '08 S80 ember black met

MSRP is $58,660 plus the free portable NAV. Third party lease. Cap cost is $47,013. Payment is $686.27 for 48 months 48K miles. Int is 4.776% I think. Only taxes and title and first months payment down. No Cap cost from me. Lease fee is built into the payment. Residual is $21,704 which is high (37%?) but I don't care. I plan to buy the car at the end of the lease. Kline Volvo in MN. I think this is fair since they are bringing the exact car in to my specifications. I think you could do a little better if you took one that was on the lot for a while. There are only two dealers in my town and the other dealer was pushing the cars they had in stock. They said they could not trade for car I wanted. That other dealer was $750/month plus a $400 lease fee for a demo with 5K mi. I have purchased four other volvo's from Kline including an '04 XC90 which has been a very good car. I assume that the third party banks have a high residual so that you want to keep the car and they don't get it back. Not a bad thing. Should have the car by the end of the month.

I'm not familiar with the $1175 lease cash which you mention in your reply to javafan1. Is this available in all regions? (I'm in New York). Does this mean that Volvo is giving me $1175 which I can apply vs the downpayment? For the past couple of weeks Volvo has been advertising a 24 month lease for $399 a month with 10,500 mi/yr on a 2008 XC70 with premium, climate, metallic paint and dual dvd rear seat entertainment package. They show MSRP as 43575. Cash due at signing is $3443. They call the dvd entertainment package "complimentary". When the car first came out the lease payment was advertised higher and there was no "complimentary" dvd system, so I am guessing the XC70 is not moving that well in NY. Also do you have any thoughts on what the money factor and residual would be on this vehicle currently? Thanks for any help you can provide!
Re: 2008 Volvo XC90 - Is this a good deal? [volvohelp]
by kcrove on Tue Nov 20 11:20:46 PST 2007
Sounds reasonable. Here in NJ we obtained a similar xc90, though it also has BLIS and no DVD player. for 590/mo 24 mo, 12k mi. Up front consisted of approx $1,600. NJ has a high registration fee and gas guzzler fee so that made up quite a bit of the up front costs. Then again, we did not post a security deposit.
