Buying a car from a Toyota Car Dealer

A non-buying experience by yatesjo on Thu Jul 10 17:14:52 PDT 2008

What I have as of now is a non-buying experience. We are currently in the market for a 2008 LE 8 passenger with the EVP2 and audio upgrade. In June I worked up a number of dealer quotes and with some negotiations had 3 different dealers willing to sell me vans at $27141 before rebate. That's a pretty good deal you might say... $4000 below MSRP and more than $800 below invoice. What more could I want? Well we have a preference for Blue Mirage or Silver. Dealer 1 (Capitol Toyota) only has white, dealer 2 (Stevens Creek Toyota) has black and sand but dealer 3 (Sunnyvale Toyota) says they have both blue and silver in their selection. So on June 24 I call the person up and say"let do this." Then I get... "I'm sorry we don't have it in stock right now... but I can get it for you. We'll transfer it from another dealer. All I need is a $500 deposit." So I give her my credit card info to do the deposit. A little while later she calls back and says "I talked to my manager and we can't do the transfer at that price, but we have 1 blue and 2 silver vans coming on July 7." I respond "I was hoping to take advantage of the 60 month at 0% that expires at the end of the month." She responds "I'll put your name on one and as soon as we get the VIN we'll start the paperwork and lock in the June special for you." "OK!" I say, "Put my name on the blue one." She promises to keep me updated on the status of my van. A couple days pass and I send an email to confirm all the details of what we talked about on the phone. She writes back with an update saying thanks and she doesn't have the VIN yet. That weekend was busy for me so I didn't follow up until July 1st when I realized that I hadn't heard anything from her but by then the June specials were over and the July specials increased the cash back but only offered the 0% financing for 48 months. As it turns out, she never did get the VIN number or start the paperwork for me. All I get as a response from her is "I can't control Toyota's incentives." As for the van she said would come on 7/7 it turns out is only starting to build this week and won't come until 7/18 at the earliest. Because the sales person didn't follow through on any point of what she said she would do, I missed out on incentives worth more than $1000 over the period of 5 years. The sad thing is if she just told me "sorry I won't be able to get the information in time for the June specials" before the month ended, I would probably have just bought a van of a different color from her. This has been a most infuriating buying experience and I have decided I will never buy any vehicle from Sunnyvale Toyota. Thankfully they never did get any of my money. Now I have to go back around to the other dealers I passed on because of this and renegotiate but will inevitably will have to pay more than I would have if Sunnyvale just been honest with me.

Pricing in OK by sooner_dave on Mon Mar 10 11:02:55 PDT 2008

Looking for any experiences dealing with Oklahoma City-area Toyota dealerships....suspect I will be dropping the hammer shortly on an Desert Sand Mica 08 Sienna LE w/QF (EVP2), EF (10.2 DVD), A0 (Extra Mile Pkg A)....pricing sites agree on MSRP of 29,119. Edmunds TMV doesn't include EF (listed at 1125/1499 inv/ret on other sites). Invoice at other sites seems to be consistent at $25,871, $1K less if you take current customer cash rather than low APR financing. OK is considered in the Gulf Toyota region, which imposes an extra $55 destination charge over the base $685. Edmunds generally projects target prices for Siennas at approx 3.8% over invoice: Using that as a base, invoice of $25,871, that leads me to guesstimate an Edmunds price of $26,854, which actually sounds just a bit high to me. That ends up giving the dealer $983 + 2% HB ($517) on the base MSRP, for a total of exactly $1,500 profit. I don't think I could find a dealer that would do a deal for $26,000, so a "middle of the road" number ends up being about $26,400 OTD. Even at that, $1,046 to the dealer sounds like I'm being pretty generous ($529 over inv + $517 HB). Thoughts? (Note: I will be paying taxes and license fees in a separate transaction, not financed, so OTD price is my entire expense to the dealer. I mention that because some posters include tax and other charges in their OTD prices, which wouldn't be a proper comparison for me). Would appreciate any feedback on experiences on Oklahoma Cita area Toyota dealerships, and thoughts about pricing strategy above. Thanks, soonerdave

What's the MSRP on the window sticker? Here's my personal opinion on purchase prices for '08 Sequoias. Its based on my shopping and recent purchase of a '08 Sequoia. Its an easy calculation and applies to all models with any mix of options. Take your final negotiated price for the vehicle only (no taxes, registration, documentation etc as these vary greatly from region to region and state to state). Divide that vehicle price by the actual manufacturer's sticker price. This is the price for the vehicle as it was shipped from the manufacturer and is located on the window sticker. The final total on the window sticker is the vehicle cost to the dealer plus additional expenses incurred by the dealership for taking delivery of that vehicle from Toyota. This window sticker cannot be altered by the dealer or even removed by the dealer under federal law. Only the purchaser can remove this label. If there are additional options the dealer is charging you for that are not on this window sticker it was added by the dealership after they took delivery. Here's my ratings of the deal based on dividing the vehicle price by the MSRP if you get a number greater than 1.0...you got ripped off Equal to 1.0...you paid list price (poor deal) .98-1.0...marginal discount .95-.98...OK .93-.95...good deal .91-.93...excellent deal .89-.91...outstanding deal Just my .$.02 Under your grading system I got an "outstanding deal". 2008 Platinum in Desert Sand Mica and beige leather, with cold weather package, laser cruise, dvd entertainment, daytime running lights, front skid plate and wheel locks, with a MSRP of $59,201 for only $53,580. If my math is correct that is .90505. Do I get a prize? I am still waiting for delivery. Signed the deal last week and left the deposit.

OK...how about prices on a used RAV4? by michaelpsu on Wed Feb 28 06:01:21 PST 2007

It suddenly hit me this weekend that I would like to have a RAV4. I was driving past our local dealer, whom I have never had luck dealing with in the past, and noticed that they had a used '06 4cyl Limited with 6900 miles sitting on the lot. I stopped yesterday...after running some numbers on my own...to take it for a drive and see where we would stand. The RAV4 rides and drives like a dream. I am definately sold on the vehicle. This one has all of the features that I want, JBL, moonroof, DRL...but is the wrong color. It is tan...and I really want red. Their list price is $22,995. They offered me $15,495 for my '05 Camry SE 4cyl (with wheels, spoiler, JBL, dimming mirror, trunk mat and net) with 31K on it. The salesman went nuts over my car...said that he had never seen an SE in desert sand. Said that he would probably take it for his demo if I traded it. $7500 difference for a one year newer car, with 24K fewer miles, that was $4K more expensive when new. I am thinking that it isn't a bad deal. Invoice plus $300 on a new '07 similarly equiped would be $24,500. I have never paid more than $300 over invoice for a new car. I doubt that I could find a local dealer willing to sell for that now. A guy who works in my building just bought an '07 Limited V6 and only got $800 off sticker. What do you guys think? Should I bite?

Price on '07 LE by popper on Wed Dec 20 10:42:50 PST 2006

Started my search Monday morning for '07 LE 4 cyl. Auto. with VSC and floor mats. Turns out there aren't any LE's with VSC within a 5-state region of me. I guess they're not making it even though the literature says you can get it. So I bought an LE with just floor mats/ cargo mat in Desert Sand from Quality Toyota in Independence, KS. Paid exactly $20K OTD. Doesn't include tag and tax since we pay that later at the tag office in OK.
