Thanks For Saving Me $670!!
by rodc2 on Tue Mar 07 08:22:49 PST 2006
I have learned many things on Edmunds forums and have been helped considerably in all my Avalon decisions. The most recent was using the knowledge gained here to save $670. Although not normally a fan of extended warranties, I was a little concerned with the cost of potential failures of some of the "Gee Whiz Electronics" in my '06 Limited. My dealership initially wanted $1650 (retail price) for the Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty (7 Year/100,000 mile/zero deductable). I used the information gained from Edmunds forums to reduce the price to $980, which I consider a much more reasonable cost for this additional "peace of mind". The best thing about it was my dealership's "Service Contract Reimbursement Guarantee" which states "in writing" that I will receive a 100% reimbursement of my $980 at the conclusion of warranty period if the extended warranty has never been used. My dealership was Heartland Toyota of Bremerton Washington who provided me a very pleasant buying experience in all respects. Other dealerships that allegedly (I have not confirmed this personally) sell the Toyota Platinum 7 year/100,000 mile/zero deductable warranty for $985 are: Toyota of Greenfield, MA Toyota of Glen Burnie, MD Crown Toyota, KS Dan Porter Motors, ND Stone's Town & Country Motors, ID Thanks again for all the great forum inputs. While shopping for a 2006 Limited in my choice of color, I saw that this dealer had one in stock. I called and inquired, providing the stock number. The salesman - who sounded about 17 years old wasn't willing to look up the car while I waited - he wanted my phone number (Ploy #1). I finally convinced him to check to see if they actually had the car in inventory, but he wasn't willing to quote a price, insisting I come in. I got the impression they deal with a lot of uninformed buyers, or people who 'have' to buy a car, and the idea of speaking with someone who was fully informed about the car and it's accessories, and was qualified and ready to buy the car was a rare experience for them. He still kept giving me a runaround so I terminated the call and phoned back and asked for the sales manager. While speaking to him, evidently the salesman was in the background listening and said to the manager I was a smarta**. I did get a price from the sales manager, but forgot to ask what color the interior was. When I called back the sales manager was in a meeting, so I left a message. When he called me back the first words out of his mouth were "this better be good, it's a long distance call". I can't recall ever being treated more rudely by a car dealer. In my opinion, this dealer is a fast-buck type, ready to pull any shenangans necessary to even get a customer in the showroom. I would suggest anyone contacting them be very cautious - and be prepared for the worst kind of tactics.

Hi doug889, I am getting the car from Del Toyota in Thorndale PA, for 38400 + 65 for doc fees and temp tags. I got quotes for 200 less, one in Glen Burnie, MD and one in Ohio ( this was just too far), but these guys sent me a signed purchase order without being a pain about it and held the car for me without me having to pay $500 deposit. They were really helpful plus the car is on their lot. It is the '05 XLE Limited AWD w/ HO package. I think prices mught be going down a little. I know Fitz is now $1100 over invoice from $3300, on this car which is still more than 500 more than what I am paying and they wouldn't match it even though I had a signed purchase order in their region. THey came up with some lame loophole like this dealership was too small or something like that.
LE 8 for below dealer invoice

Hello, here's my deal: Sienna LE 8 passenger Options: FE BW (safety) CF (Floor Mats) GN (Cargo Net) HP (Hood Protector) Edmunds Invoice: $25,095 including freight Dealer Invoice: $25,547 (including profits of $446 TDA, $488 holdback, $244 financial reserve) No haggle price: $25,519 plus state fees (tax/tags/title) How I did it: Well, I should have listened to my wife and bought at the end of Dec, when the deals were better (like member ‘viche’ did). I didn’t find Edmund’s site until Jan, and was amazed at how much useful information is on it. I should have just dealt with Carmax, as they were the easiest to deal with and had the best price in the end. Instead, at the end of Jan I tried the fax attack method described on Edmunds site, sending 25 faxes to dealers in Maryland and Virginia addressed to the generic sales manager. I received 9 responses (would have done better if I got their names) for $1000 (Alexandria, Jerry, Bayside, Silver Spring, Miller), $1600 (Beltway, 355), and $2400 (Koons) over Edmunds invoice. Nothing to get too excited about. Since Mar 31 is the end of Toyota’s fiscal year, I tried again this week with the email attack method, sending to the same 25 dealers in MD and VA, using the emails from the dealers web sites. I also went to the Carmax site and used their web form to request a quote. This time I received quotes for $500 (Carmax), $1000 (Motorworld), $1200 (Frederick), $1500 (Silver Spring, Jerrys), $1800 (Bowie), and $4000 (Glen Burnie) over Edmunds invoice. Since Carmax had the color and price I wanted, I jumped on it. Now just have to read all great modifications done by 'kmead' when I pick up the Sienna next week. If you're planning on buying soon, take a look at your local Carmax's deal that ends Mar 31. Otherwise, you may be better off waiting until the end of June for good deals. Happy motoring!
