Re: Good Price? [rchen9]

rchen9 -- Hello. Do you mind sharing the MSRP for your Rav4? I looked up the MSRP for your listed options on Edmunds.com and I came up with $28,865. If that's right, you managed about $2600 off MSRP. My dealership (salesman) says the most he's seen anyone get off is $500 (Boise, ID), but I think that's BS. I'm trying to figure out how low I can reasonably go and still feel confident that there's a reasonable profit in it for the dealership. Thanks! P.M.
My experience has been terrible!

I will try not to rant too much here, but I have been absolutely astounded at how bad of an experience my fiance and I have had in buying this car from Parker Toyota in Coeur d'Alene, ID. We decided on the hybrid version of the camry because of my long commute to the office, and obviously since we live in a more rural area of the Pac Northwest we went into the dealership full knowing it may take a while for us to find a fully loaded TCH. So we did not get our hearts too set on getting this particular car. We had just wanted to take a look at it. It was to our surpise when the salesman said that they had one in Boise, and would have it transferred up. So we signed on it. One week went by and after I didn't hear from the dealership I called them, only to find out that the car had been sold from under us... so we were told that they could get one off of the next shipment from Japan.. in 6 weeks. So I wait for the call and sure enough 6 wks later I am told the delivery date will be 7-17 or 7-18. Well sure enough, as I could have guessed, that didn't happen. "Maybe by Thursday".... I am so tired of waiting for the thing. I know they are in high demand, but I don't think that customers should feel this exausted  and upset by the service. I had never had my heart set on this car, and could have easily gone and purchased a Lexus for much less hassle... but a commitment is a commitment, I just wish our dealership cared. At least from reading the posts here, we won't be too dissapointed in the car itself :)
Re: price for 06 Corolla LE [makis]

Sounds fair, probably a better deal than we got but then we had some special circumstances. Our younger daughter needed a newer car and we were looking at a '03 CE (maroon red, auto, aftermarket tinted windows, nice TSW rims...not bling bling type...cd player and a XM radio, 100k aftermarket warranty, 50k miles...and pampered. We paid $9k cash (down from $12k asking) from a private owner at the Air Force base about 50 miles away...her husband is in Afghanistan and she is leaving the area. The car is spotless and our daughter loves it. When I was looking at it my wife mentioned if my daughter didn't want it, she would take it! Well, injecting the little Buddhist idealogy that "everything happens for a reason", when we went down to pick the car up, my wife's '01 Oldsmobile Aurora with 45k miles on it started shifting roughly and whining. We made it back home (Boise, ID) and I took it to a local transmission place and it was going to be nearly $3k for a transmission (Aurora's are a money pit...I've now learned my lesson with GM) I tried buying a U.S. company car(s) and have had nothing but headaches. First with a Ford mini-van, then a Pontiac Grand Prix, then with the Olds Aurora. Oh, and my daughter's first car which was a Ford Focus. I thought about it for a moment and told the mechanic I needed to look into warranty stuff (I didn't purchase a extended warranty....didn't feel I should have to for a "flagship" car). I drove over two blocks to Peterson Toyota and traded the Aurora and a '99 Grand Prix in on a '06 Le. I didn't haggle too much because they gave me $8k for the Aurora (luckily they didn't test drive it) and $3k for the Grand Prix (another lemon if there ever was one..I could write a book on that car). The Grand Prix was actually a "surplus" car because I now ride a bicycle to work and have a VW bus for buzzing around if needed. We got the LE for $15,800 and it does have a multi-disc player and then the standard fare...power windows, cruise, door locks, etc. Bottomline is dollars aside, the peace of mind of not having GM money pits is well worth any "extra" amount I may have paid. My wife absolutely loves the car and while it isn't quite the road car the Aurora it is 10 times the car overall. It is relatively quiet, simple, straightforward, easy to drive, comfortable, and just downright pleasant. It doesn't have 9 thousand buttons on the dash to complicate matters like the Olds and Grand Prix had. Peterson Toyota here in Boise is definitely worldclass in "paying attention" to customer service. The salesperson was friendly and not pushy...polished. This was far different than the GM dealers I dealt with. Could I have done better? Maybe, but crying over a few bucks just isn't worth it when one looks at the grand scheme of things.
Re: 4Runner Limited 2004

I recently bought a 2004 Limited 4Runner 4x4 from Carmax Toyota (Laurel) in Maryland. The SUV has a sunroof/moonroof, XREAS shocks, side air bags, JBL soundsystem, power leather seats, the cargo shelf, etc. I think it had every option except the video camera and navigation system. I paid $33,888 plus $15 for temporary tags and $90 processing fee.   I searched all over the internet, called folks in my area, and got offers via email from multiple dealers. This seemed like a good price and it was identical to the price a coworker of mine paid for the same vehicle in Chicago that he purchased via the Costco program. The price was about $3-4,000 less than the same vehicle in my current location (Boise, ID).   The buying experience was excellent. There was absolutely no pressure, no hidden fees, no haggling, no market adjustment fees, or any of that other garbage. They didn't ask about coating for seats, underbody, or any of that nonsense. Basically, it was like buying an expensive six pack at the store. You know exactly what you are buying and what you are going to pay.   So, if you are in the market for a Toyota and you do not want to haggle or have people pull a fast one on you, I highly recommend buying from Carmax. It is also relatively close to the Darcars that was mentioned previously.   PS--I don't work for Carmax or own their stock. The reason I posted this is that I got royally screwed by a car dealer in Tysons Corner the first time that I bought a car and I will never haggle with scumbag carsalesmen again. Carmax dealt with me professionally and they offered a lower price than anyone else that I found. You can look through their entire inventory online.

"If the ad fee is in the car's invoice, paying it seems unavoidable. If it has been written into the dealership's contract as an additional item, you may be able to get it removed." Letters to the Editors Instead of playing the percentages, just focus on your out the door price, and let the dealer allocate your money how it wants to. Steve, Host

That site looks pretty skinny on the free info and seems more like a come-on to get your $20. Our Tips and Advice link has tons of info and it's free (and don't miss Confessions of a Car Salesman for the insiders view from the other side of the table). Steve, Host
