carnaught - I don't know if you would really call it a "custom" order; actually, it's really just getting on the waiting list (I was number 6) and telling them exactly what I wanted. I did not want "extras" added at port. It's very difficult to find a Prius configured with ONLY pkg. 2 and carpet mats. Most buyers want all the bells and whistles. I used a smaller dealer outside of the metro-Atlanta area (Heyward Allen in Athens, GA) 100 miles from my home and did accept a different color than my first 2 choices. The color choice really suits me.
I've checked everywhere in the state of GA and finally just got on the waiting list in Athens. It's a two-hour drive over there for me, but at least I don't have to go out of state! I did all of my research with Edmunds.com and cars.com and forget about TMV and Smart Target Price. I could not find one dealer selling for below MSRP. I did find numerous dealers adding $1,500 onto MSRP! Watch the documentation fees -- they really vary. Since I'm 6th on the waiting list, it could be a while before I receive my pkg. 2, but the waiting lists are just going to get longer with the rising gas prices. Oh, and not every Prius in the Southeast region comes with the $700 Toyoguard on it. I've requested mine without it, which means it could add to my wait. Good luck in your search -- keep me posted as to how it's going. I'll let you know how long it takes for mine to arrive!
took del. today ,wife works for S.E.T. set price for asso. bought from heyward allen in athens ga. ser. is way above the norm for dealers would recm. them to anyone!
I bought my Camry Hybrid 2 weeks ago outside Atlanta. I knew exactly what I wanted and the price I was willing to pay. I checked 5 Atlanta-area dealerships, then went to CarsDirect.com and found the dealer I ultimately used in Athens, GA (about an hour away). My drive out price (including EVERYTHING) was $31.250 (with leather seats, moonroof, NAV system, heated seats and mirrors, and mats) for a drive out price (including EVERYTHING) of $31.2. The sticker on this particular car was supposedly $23,580 (no options, no delivery, processing, handling, no tax, title, etc) but I did not focus on the sticker price. I negotiated the deal with the Athens dealer, we agreed on price, I drove to Athens, completed the paperwork in about 30 minutes, and was on my way. My suggestion is to calculate your maximum "out the door" price yourself (based on research) and challenge the dealers to meet/beat it. Thanks and good luck
