Nelson Mazda Nashville
Let me first say I am a fairly seasoned new car buyer. I buy through the internet department, and thoroughly enjoy the sales process of buying a car. Sometimes I'll stop at dealers just to look at a car I know I'm not going to buy, and I toy with the salespeople and 'managers' - hey, they toy with us too!
So, on my last three cars I spent plenty of time test driving cars and dealerships. Guess what, dealerships still act like they did 20 years ago. Games, games, and more games. I actually read the Edmunds undercover article where they had a journalist act as a car salesman. I go in and tell the dealers not to play 'four square' and other stupid games. Most do it anyway.
Here is where the Mazda Nashville guys are different. I email the internet sales department. I describe my trade in and require a rough commitment of trade value upfront, before I even step on the lot. They give me a good price.
Second, I specify that I do not and will not purchase dealer add ons like pinstripes, window etch, gap insurance - basically anything that the dealer doesn't list as an option.
Third, I tell them it will be a quick transaction and I already have financing in place but they are welcome to compete. I also ( most importantly ) require them to commit to blanked discounts off MSRP - which must bring the car to Edmunds TMV or less ( don't mention TMV - you might get them to go deeper ).
After listing these demands, I have bought three cars from this Mazda dealer over two years. They've been upfront every time.
These guys can actually sell you a car at significant discount off MSRP ( depending on time of year, incentives, etc ) without the pain of negotiating for hours.
Recently I had an issue with my car and called the sales manager on a saturday night around 8pm. He actually drove a loaner down to my house and had a wrecker pick up my car.
You'll likely never get that from a non-luxury dealer. My Mazda3 is on par with the Lexus CT200h that I was comparing it with last time I purchased, for about $15k less. Seriously, go compare.
So, for a guy that gets kicks out of sleezy dealers and dealer games, I'm really at a loss when I shop at Nelson. You just show up and buy a car. Strange...
If you don't get the same warm experience I have, ask for the sales manager ( Randy Dismang ). He's a stand up guy and I've worked with him on all three car deals.
I think these guys just like to 'move' cars and they dont worry so much about squeezing an extra $500 out of you by playing games.
Smart move. I'd like to see these guys be successful, and that's why I spent the time to write this.
