Well, I can't really sell it :-( It's leased, so all I can try is to find someone to take over the lease, right? Or am I wrong? How "killed" do you think I'll get?... The car depreciates (according to the lease contract) ~$8,300 in 4 years, 15,000 miles/year. Now it has 1 year, 11,000 miles. Granted, it's the first year :-( But I'm hoping that the depreciation would be something like: 1st year = $3,200; 2nd year = $2,600; 3rd year = 1500; 4th year = 1000. Am I way off? What do people here think? Thanks, --B

I never really depended on the KBB for pricing. I did some research and found that the dealer invoice on the 2006 limited was $31,571. According to VinCentric, the depreciation on a 2006 7 passenger ltd is $8091 in year 1 and $2611 in year 2 (a $10,702 two year depreciation total). Thus, the actual value of the vehicle is somewhere around $20,869 - $22,175. I know that the dealer has had this vehicle for a long while now, and that someone at the dealership has been racking up the miles. The same wehicle was originally advertised on the internet with 8800 miles. There is currently ~2500 miles on the tripometer. I thought that ~$23,500 would be the point that I would tell the dealer "thanks, but maybe another time ... call me if you change your mind" and walk out. I would expect to receive a call back by the end of the month, but if not, I'd continue to look around. I'm under no pressure to buy right now. My feeling is that this dealer has had a very slow January, even for a Subaru dealer. Also, according to a recent press release from Subaru of America, the December 06 sales of new Tribecas are down 42% from December 05. Unfortunately for Subaru, the Tribeca is their albatross, the Japanese Edsel! However, this is how I like to buy my cars, finding outstanding deals on quality vehicles that are out of favor with the general "current hot prestige oriented" buying public. My current car is a 93 Mitsubishi Diamante wagon, a high quality vehicle that was passed over by the general public. I bought it for $6500 six years ago and put on an additional 100,000+ miles on it since. Granted, the Tribeca is more than a little out there in styling (some may say it's uglier than a baboon's butt), but it does kinda of grow on you. However, it has excellent reliability and crash test reviews, and I can handle "ugly" at the right price.

FWIW- the backup camera on the '07's (w/ Nav) is excellent. It quickly switches the big screen over to the camera whenever you put it in reverse, has excellent visibility at night, and has colored lines that show exactly the width of the car. Sure- it's more expensive than an aftermarket system- but if you're buying a brand new (luxury) SUV- who the heck wants extra stuff sitting on the dash. Granted- you can buy an '06 a few grand cheaper, but it will be worth less when you sell it a few years from now as well- so factor that in.

Ultimately- my local dealer couldn't get me the vehicle that I wanted, or even my second choice. So, I ended up going out of state and am getting a vehicle from South Coast Subaru in Costa Mesa, CA. Exactly at "Invoice minus $1250"- plus a $45 doc fee, $8 for tire disposal and $350 to ship it to me. Final price is $33,483. I never paid attention to what the MSRP was- as we only dealt from the Invoice price. No hassle, no haggle. They knew the rock bottom going rate for the vehicle. I asked for this price, and they didn't hesitate to say 'OK'. Granted, you can do a couple hundred better from Fitzmall, but I'm nowhere near the right coast, and I'm not one to quibble on the last $100 after I feel like I'm getting a solid deal.
Subaru $1250 marketing incentive

I see on Edmunds that SOA is offering dealers $1250 in marketing incentive until Sept 5th. Granted, nobody can predict the future of what SOA will do- but I'm interested in buying a 'Beca in Oct/Nov timeframe. Is it reasonable to expect that the deals might be even better then? What has Subie done in the past. (this will be my first Subie.)

Well, dealers have the holdback and depending on the time and model, other little incentives that we may never know about. Granted, they're scraping by, but it's not as if they have nothing left after paying the manufacturer for the car you bought at invoice. That said, you paid invoice of $30842? No rebate? That's $1500 the dealer made right there, plus whatever he charged you in doc fees. :(
