this is exactly the problem that I have been running into. I want an '09 Special Edition with auto. Used the Consumes Report method which is slightly lower than TMV. Two problems, i can not find out what the heck everyone is talking about regarding the rebates of $1500, and the second problem is that no matter whom I use, even carsdirect.com, whenever i request a specific quote, i get a call back or message that says "C'mon down" ie- no internet offers, come in so I can steal your gold teeth! Is it something bout New York? (I am just above the city -NYC- line. Any advice or tips? Am willing to travel a bit, but a;already got two bait and switch offers from upstate NY dealers before i decided to go with a new model.

The issue hinges on the residence of the car buyer. If you are a New Yorker and buy your car in Florida you can get the credit for the sales tax paid in Florida since it it unlikely that a dealer in Florida is authorized to collect NY sales tax. However, if you are a resident of Florida at the time of purchase you are exempt from the New York sales tax. From the NY DMV site: (http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/register.htm#prooftax) "If you were not a resident of NYS when the vehicle was purchased, use form DTF-803 to receive a non-resident exemption from NYS sales tax."

From looking at http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/register.htm#california It appears that if you bought and registered the vehicle out of state then you don't need the PZEV emissions standard. You also do not pay sales tax if the vehicle was purchased out of state and you paid sales tax in that state. So the factors in your decision become - sales price in Florida vs New York (+PZEV vs non PZEV) - sales tax in each location - cost of registering in Florida and then in New York vs registering PZEV in New York just once. - convenience of having a vehicle to drive to the new state.

The price I got for a X limited is about 200 dollars below invoice but that is no PZEV engine. there is none PZEV in FL. I understant that a non PZEV car will not be able to register in NY. Am I right? I also contacted the dealer near the city I will move to. the sales tax is about 8%. but they do not have any in inventory. Anyone knows if I buy a non-pzev forester in FL and then move to New York, what will happen? I will receive a ticket or has to replace the emission system to satisfy the requirement. thanks!

I checked -- you're looking at sedan pricing, not wagon. Base Edmunds invoice for the wagon -- $21645 Invoice cost of options/PZEV emissions -- $786 Destination (I counted that in my total)--$625 Total--$23056 If it is a sedan you're after, those seem to be in much greater supply than the SE wagons. At most I would offer invoice minus rebate, and you could probably do a little better than that, even.

I'm confused . . . why wouldn't you just buy one from the same dealer your friend did? Anyway, the dealers might be telling the truth when they say the SE wagon is in short supply. When I bought mine in Dec, there was only one in silver at all of the dealers in the greater NY/NJ area, e.g., and I haven't seen one in silver since. A quick inventory check reveals that most of the dealers up here don't have any SE wagons in stock, and at this late date, I doubt the cavalry is coming. You can find a couple at some of the big-volume stores -- almost always in one of the two blue colors. FWIW, I paid $21500 + TTL. That includes the $750 rebate, but I also got some options (fogs, roof rack, splash guards, cargo tray, nets, mats), and up here we get the PZEV emissions equipment($200). According to Edmunds, that's roughly $1500 under invoice.
