$1000 under invoice? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. 9.2% tax? Ouch.

I purchased a new '08 2.5i auto in Seattle for $21,750 (no options other than an auto-dimming mirror) in October. When I was finally able to sell it, I managed to get $21,300 for it in Alaska, which was $1,000 less than I expected going in. While that was my fault for not better forecasting where the economy was headed, the total cost of ownership was still no more expensive than the 1-way airline tickets for my family back to Alaska would have been. My car had about 7500 miles at the time of sale, was absolutely immaculate, fully winterized for Fairbanks, came with all records (including a mileage log), and I had it in to a dealer several times to work out interior rattle problems so the new owner would not have to deal with them. All told, the new owner received a screaming deal and I thoroughly enjoyed owning it, even if it was for a short while. Tough to say why these others are for sale, but there are many possible reasons. If they have a clean CarFax and are still under warranty (less than 36,000 miles), then they should be decent bets barring obvious abuse.

Back in September, I was also quoted $20K for an '07 Outback with 10.5K miles. I was going a little higher than I wanted, but offered $19.5K on it and was refused. I did not end up buying that car.

Listen for piston slap as well. Apparently it is not a longevity issue (though I have my doubts about that), but it sure is noisy and embarrassing. If it is present, you will not be able to miss it on start up, especially if the engine is cold.

We had to go automatic because of potential babysitters driving. Haha, if babysitters will be driving it, you definitely do not want a turbo! :P

That is an amazing price! Congratulations - hopefully it will prove to be a reliable and rewarding car. :D
