Buying a car from a Mitsubishi Car Dealer
I'll ditto the congrats. I'm also a 2-time Mitsu owner - I had a '99 Galant LS V6 for over 10 years & 152K miles and currently have a 2 year old '10 Outlander GT with just over 20K miles. Beyond routine maintenance the Galant had exactly one minor mechanical repair during it's time and so far the Outlander has needed nothing beyond oil changes & tire rotations. No repairs, no recalls. It just works. Enjoy the ride!
As 71alpha says, the price seems a bit high. You might search listings to see or inquire in the used car forum thread. Reliability-wise I don't see any issues. Before buying my '10 Outlander GT I had a '99 Galant LS V6. It had exactly one mechanical repair in 10.5 years & 152K miles. Beyond that, I blew out a speaker (me likes me music loud sometimes) & replaced a trim piece that a car wash damaged. Everything else was normal wear. I believe the '07 would still have some factory warranty left so you'd have some coverage should something happen.
With any high mileage car, the care & maintenance that it's received is going to count for a lot when it comes to how reliable you can hope it to be going forward. I'd suggest asking to see copies of the maintenance records, paying closest attention to the major service intervals (30/60/90/120K miles) and making sure the routine stuff like oil changes were done on time (doesn't have to be exact; just close). At 60K & 120K there should have been a timing belt change. There should probably, though I can't confirm, be a transmission fluid change in there somewhere (some trans are lifetime on their fluids; some aren't). Refer to the owners manual (hopefully the seller still has it) to confirm. If it hasn't happened yet, around 140K might be time for a water pump replacement. This isn't a routine maintenance item but in general, 120-150K is a reasonable life expectancy. That said, if it hasn't been done it wouldn't keep me from buying; just something to consider as a possible future maintenance item. As to the car itself & Mitsubishis in general, I don't see any problems. I'm a two-time Mitsu owner ('99 Galant and '10 Outlander) and like the brand. I've not had any reliability issues. My Galant, BTW, shares the engine (and platform and other components) with the Eclipse. I had 152K miles on the Galant when I sold it to buy the Outlander. Everything still worked just fine, but after over 10 years in one car I was simply ready for a change. On the car specifically, look to see if it's had aftermarket engine modifications. If so, there's a higher chance that it's been driven hard. That wouldn't rule out buying it as long as the maintenance is done, but a driven-hard car + minimal maintenance would tell me to look elsewhere.
I picked up a GT in December. Price was within $300 of Edmunds' TMV. Mine is loaded with basically everything but the rear entertainment system. Chicago suburbs.
I want to thank all for the great job of research and time to share your buying expirience. Finaly I got my Mitsubishi Outlander :) today after about 2 monts of research and compairing smaller SUV's. My last two choises were the Mitsubishi or Mazda CX-7. The Mitsubishi won because of the ride, V6, warranty, financing and fuel. Here is my deal from Grand Mitsubishi in Bensenville,IL- XLS 4WD, sun & sound, navigation, etc for 26,500. I was dealing with 4 dealer and finaly got the best deal for me. That also includes free lifetime oil change and 2500 cupons for any maintanance. So I want to thank everyone in the forum and happy driving. ;)
