Buying a car from a Mitsubishi Car Dealer
This may be a little off topic but I just wanted to let you guys know that you'd better watch out for the tricks that Mitsubishi dealers pulled. I just got cheated by a Mitsubishi dealer in Industry, CA. They added $5k worth of hidden charges such as leather seat protection to my Lancer with cloth seat, gap insurance that's already included in my car purchase and extended warranty. Be sure to look at your purchase contract carefully and make sure that you fill out N/A in any blank spots. Be very aware of dealing with Mitsubishi dealers in So. Cal especially in the San Gabriel Valley. Never believe those full-page back cover ads in the Sunday newspaper. At the end, my $11k car got inflated to $18k with all of those useless paint protection or leather protection. After I complained to Mitsubishi Corporate, they didn't care about penalizing the dealer neither. Just think twice before you get a Mitsubishi especially with dealers in Industry, CA or Puente Hills.
When I got my car, my calculation of the tax, license and fee comes out to be very close to 10.5% of the vehicle price. So in my case, the vehicle price plus two accessories were $28,820, 10.5% of it was about $3,026. The final out the door price was about $31,826. I think Menlo Park and San Jose have the same sale tax (or Menlo Park is 0.25% less). Anyhow, the sale tax alone is 8.75%, the DMV registration is right about 1.5%, and then they need to charge like $28 (or about 0.1%) for registering electronically with DMV. Additionally, in my case, there was a $55 doc fee that the dealer charged me. I didn't argue with them on this because the whole negotiation was pretty smooth and I was willing to let them make $55 off of me. That was how I got to 10.5%. From your number, they are charging you less than 10% of fees on the vehicle price, so it is actually better than usual. Good luck. By the way, whoever said tax plus license cost between $300-500 is probably not living in CA. Like I said, in the bay area the sales tax alone is 8.50-8.75%, so the min. tax on a $28K vehicle will be over $2K.
