Thanks, Kevin. That was very helpful. It looks like they are running some new incentives to move these. The $4000 is certainly attractive! A month or two ago I was getting the "we don't discount these" story. At the same time, I noticed my local dealer had the same 5 or 6 units sitting there for weeks; they weren't selling quickly in this economy I assume. Enjoy your GLK, it sounds nice! Keith

Kevinoc, Can you do me a small favor and tell me what the MSRP on your GLK was? I am trying to get an idea of where you started versus your ending position of $35,125. That sounds like an outstanding deal. From what I can tell, you don't have the Premium package, correct? Thanks in advance for the additional information. Keith

Need Help and Advice to trade in a 2002 CLK430
by peterk77 on Wed Aug 22 22:03:48 PDT 2007
Hi, I am new to Edmunds forum and I have a "situation". Last year I traded a 2006 Jeep Liberty for a Certified Pre-Owned 2002 CLK430. The purchase price for the MB was 29K and I lost about 9K on the trade in (too many miles on the Jeep). Due to the mileage I do per year, I could not lease and so I added the extended waranty and all the "extra's". My payment is 844.00/mos for 60 mos (a whopping 50K for a used MB). To make a long story short I added about 50K miles on the MB since then and it has about 75K miles now. I owe 35K and its trade-in is about 19K-21K. I would like to get out of this deal and maybe get into a lease, but I don't know the best way to go about it without losing a TON of money AGAIN! At this point I am not picky on the make or model of another vehicle but I would like to stay in the 25K-35K category of a mid sized car. I am only going to use it to go back and forth to work. Can anyone give me some advice please? Oh, I can still afford the 844.00 payment, but I don't think its worth taking the 2002 MB CLK430 for another 3+ years. By that time it will probably have over 100K miles and then might not be worth a whole lot. Thanks in advance, Peter K

blckislandguy, We would be very appreciative of the coffee. :-) I do apologize to everyone out there, if I did ever say anything offensive and in defense of the car industry, but there are a few dealerships and people in the car business that take great pride in their jobs, and try to make 100% sure that the customer is fully satisfied. But at the same time we also need to make a living. I am not a believer in destroying a customer but at the same time, I dont think the customers should destroy us. I truly believe that the manufacturers start all posts and blogs, just to get customers fired up, and beat up on dealerships, and then they sit back, chuckle, watch the fireworks, and get their product into the customers driveway. But oh well this is the life I have chosen, and for now it pays the bills. I am happy to make people happy, and still enjoy the look on peoples faces when they pick up their brand new car, and are excited. It is a great feeling to see a person pick up a brand new M5 or 335 coupe and look like a little boy on Christmas day. It makes the bad days worth it. Julius

Skrontz, Yes I am a dealer. I work for a BMW dealer, and I worked at Mercedes Benz before this. August 1st BMW did announce what I wrote before. Discounts will not happen as lightly as you think. Every company is in business to make a profir, and the profits bmw and mercedes are generating lately are not that good. Especially when they are taking huge hits on the lease turn ins. Go to bmw or mercedes benz websites in Germany and see how much an s class or 7 series is in euros. Its about the same. Plus they pretty much buy all their cars in europe so residuals really dont come into play, and the extra cost of shipping and insurance, blah blah blah. Mercedes Benz and BMW were once considered a high line vehicle, and were not mass produced as they are now. over the past 2 months BMW residuals have dropped 5-8% across the board. Leases have actually gone up. The car business will change dramaticaly in the next year or 2. Oh and the msrp of the vehicles for 2009 has increased already. The only thing that is going to happen is alot of dealers will be closing shop, because they will not be able to sell as many cars, I know you probably dont care, but the less dealers, the less chance for you to shop from dealer to dealer, which means less discount. I am in a bullet proof area in terms of the economy, but many many dealers will be hurting in a big way. We can talk more about this in about a year. Plus how cheap do you really expect a $90,000 S-class to get?? Its not meant for everyone to have one in their driveway.
