Great Deals on GLK in March
by chummy on Thu Mar 19 17:50:46 PDT 2009
Bought my new GLK on Tuesday. Worked with 3 local dealers in and around Boston. Basically, Mercedes has an offer if you take delivery this month, if you get the Premium & Multimedia Package its an automatic $4000 off list. As for my deal, I got $4500 off a $50K MSRP at Herb Chambers in Somerville, MA. They had the exact car I wanted, Fully loaded, Met Black, Black Leather. Lighting Pack, MultiMedia, Apperance, Ipod, Heated Seats, Premium, TeleAid, Running Boards. Also my car had the Black Leather with Aluminum Trim rather than the wood. According to the Website, this combination is not possible...but I preferred it anyway. A different dealer (Westwood MA) offered $5500 of a fully loaded one MSRP $53K. I didn't want the latter car. It had the rear entertainment screens which I didn't want. However they called today, to give me $5500 of one they had in stock MSRP $47K. To late for me,...but the deals are out there. As for the car itself, the GLK is one solid car. It feels like very well built. I love the ride. Looks are polarizing, but thats why I liked it. Considered other cars: Audi Q5 - Looked like every other Audi. I saw one with a Tan interior. Not nice. 2010 Lexus RX350 - Was OK & comfortable however very dull. Ugly Dash. New FX35 - Very Nice Car. Ruled it out for NO cargo space. Not even a large suitcase. To me the GLK was a no brainer.
2005 C240 Used Car Buying Experience
by MA_Driver on Mon Jan 19 13:09:26 PST 2009
I wanted to share a recent experience in trying to buy a used Mercedes C-class, and am also interested what other reader experiences have been. In December 2008, I started actively looking for a 2005 MB C240 4Matic. I got financing through my bank and started to visit used car dealerships in the Boston area. Being the end of the year (was after Xmas), I assumed dealers may be in a negotiating mood. I was surprised at the lack of willingness to negotiate from the dealers. I seemed to have miscalculated many assumptions, which are listed below. 1. End of the year shopping - dealers didn't seem motivated to sell their cars before the end of the year. Even on cars that have been in their inventory since June 2008. 2. The economy - I assumed there would be fewer buyers looking to purchase a car in this economy, therefore, dealers would be more willing to negotiate with customers. In fact, they gave very little room in negotiations. I couldn't get many dealerships to even get back to me when I called/e-mailed for more information on a car. On average, I have been offering 10% less than their asking price. Is this unreasonable? What is an average markup/profit on a used Mercedes? What is a reasonable starting point for negotiations? 90%? 85%? 95%? I found an interesting trend on eBay. I searched for 2005 C240's and many are listed. The asking prices are similar to what I am finding at dealerships. When I searched for only auctions that ended, I found that approx. 3 out of 100 cars were actually selling. The cars that have sold were much closer to the prices I have been trying to negotiate, other listings seemed very high. I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar experience, or a different one. Is the economy not as bad as I am reading about in the news? What sort of deals are actually being had out there? Thanks!

You'll never know unless you ask. If you make it a walk-away point, you most likely will either get the deal or something closer than what you have now. You could always still shop around at other dealers, if there are any close enough. You really have nothing to lose, worse comes to worst you get the deal you have now.

That's a very good price. We bought one with the same color options a few weeks ago, I don't see many pewter cars-which I definitely like. We also got the P2 but with 4matic since we live in MA, and leather seats, we ended up paying 54K for ours which also included bluetooth and keyless go. If you factor those extras out your deal is very similar. The car is great, we love it so far. We needed a bigger car than our RX330 when we had another child and this fits the bill perfectly. I'm still surprised that I can sit comfortably in the third row, I'm 6' 230lbs. I wish there was a bit more room behind the third row, but nothing out there has appreciably more room unless you go for a suburban. The 1.9% financing is, in my mind, too good to turn down. Even with the market the way it is you can definitely do better than a 1.9% return on any investment over the next six years and be in a good position when you trade it in.
