Buying a car from a Mazda Car Dealer
Not sure if you've made this purchase yet, but I don't think its a good deal. CX9s have started to flood the pre-owned market due to the lease program vehicles. Additionally, the CX9 doesn't have a great a resale value as say a Toyota Highlander. This past week I purchased an 08 CX9 touring with rear entertainment system at 52K miles from a Mazda dealer. Car was off a lease and in extremely good condition. Asking price was $22,500 and I purchased for $19.499 + TTL. I believe this price is below the wholesale value of the vehicle which is $21,500. Its not as nice as the GT but it does include leather interior and many convenience options not found on the Base. For about another $1K to $1.5K you can have an aftermarket Kenwood or Alpine stereo with GPS and back-up camera installed. I wouldn't buy a vehicle with cosmetic damages as its an indicator the vehicle may have some other internal problems. Also were you purchasing this vehicle from a Mazda dealer? If not, you probably won't have as good a support system if other problems crop up. Oh, purchase was made in MD.
Hi to you all...I apologize upfront for this being lengthy, but I thought maybe I could help you out with what I've learned before I pose some questions of my own... I have recently begun the time consuming, confusing, learning trek to purchasing a new vehicle. I have found the "downlow" available on the internet a blessing as well as overwhelming as I need plenty of time to disaggregate all of the info before I can move on. My plan is to have something before the snow flies in Michigan as I have a Jeep Wrangler and don't want it to see the salt! Anyway, my adventure began with thinking about a truck or Crossover. (I returned a leased 2004 Ford F150 back in February of '07). I drove the Toyota Tacoma (loved it, but it doesn't come with a sunroof and leather, and unfortunately, that is a dealbreaker for me). I drove the Tundra which was beautiful, but I didn't care for the ride so much. My F-150 rode very smooth, and the Tundra felt squishy at times to where it actually upset my stomach at a few bumps.(This is a completely personal subjective opinion, so I hope not to offend). I then decided to look at the crossovers and drove an '08 Highlander Limited. The first drive I was in awe, but I think it was because it was so sleek and clean, and luxurious compared to my stark Jeep Wrangler! After I went back and did some more research, and then drove it a few days later, I didn't like it as much. For lack of a better term, it felt "floaty" and didn't feel sporty enough for me. However, it is larger and I understand, the clean sheet put it on the avalon body instead of the camry. I think I'd like to try driving the Sport model to see if it is a better ride for me. We tried the RAV4, which I thought would be great for my needs, but my boyfriend who is 6 5 1/2" was just too smoonched...damn! Oh well! We then tried the '08 Subaru Tribeca. That, in my opinion, is gorgeous...I know it did not receive such high accolades when they first came out (the front pig snout look)...anyhoo, you feel like you're in an airplane cockpit...very cool, but the overall power performance, even though it has improved, is a little too low for my needs...I tow motorcycles and seadoos... Yesterday, we went and drove the '07 Mazda Touring CX9. I wanted to drive the '08, but the dealer didn't have it, and said the two years were the same. Well, that's not true because the '08 engine gained some ponies and went from a 3.5-3.7 L engine, and there's a few more options and standards...like the blind spot detector. Anyway, I instantly loved it, but the sales guy rode with us, and that was awkward because I felt stymied and couldn't really "try" it. I have since read many reviews, have visited forums, and am overall pleased with how it was rated. I'm a little concerned about resale, as Mazda isn't "UP THERE" with Honda and Toyota, so I'm still not completely sold. We then drove the '08 Saturn Vue and '08 Outlook. I wasn't even going to consider American (for various reasons), but the reviews suggested to not overlook the Outlook :) , and since we were there, we tried the Vue, too. Both are appealing to me, and they did a great job making the outside of the Outlook appear smaller than the inside. It is not as sporty and tight a ride as the Mazda, but it has its own merits. I would say that the Saturns may be a 2nd or 3rd choice for me right now, with the Mazda being in the number 1 slot. I'm not going to consider the Honda Pilot because it is supposed to get a clean sheet for '09, and I'm afraid I won't be happy with all of the changes if I'm "stuck" with an '08, and for my tastes, the looks of the current Pilot are too plain. I'm still thinking about driving the Hyundai Santa Fe, but the '08s so far haven't been released. I saw the bigger Hyundai, the Vera Cruz, and I didn't like the body style as much as the others I'm considering, and I thought it had a pretty hefty price tag without such amenities as a navigation system. I definitely will want to try driving all of the cuvs again once I narrow down to my top 3. I think it's imperative to do this as once the emotional novelty of getting a new vehicle turns into the logical decision making mode, it's always good to go back and see if it still fits your requirements in a vehicle. So, now that I've given you my experiences, I have a few questions for all of you expert shoppers/consumers out there... Regarding the '08 Grand Touring (GT)...I have read that the 20" tires give a much rougher ride due to the low profile of the tires. I am also concerned about the cost of replacing those buggers, and I'm not too thrilled about the fake wood grain in the interior. But, I would love to have the blind spot detector, the puddle lamps, fog lamps, and a few other things that this trim level offers. I'm considering the Touring and decking it out as much as possible. I can keep it under $40,000 MSRP. Do you know if I can offer invoice or below? If I decide to purchase, and based on someone's prior suggestion,(thank you) I'm thinking of getting preapproved for financing beforehand, and will probably need to put 20% or more down to get my payments lower. I have been leasing for the last 10 years, and am not sure if I should do that again. Any input anyone can give me on whether to lease or buy (based on my info shared), GT versus T, or anything you think would be beneficial to my decision, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks for your time, and good luck to you!
Maybe so, but you just cannot beat the driving dynamics of a CX-9...oh...especially if you're comparing to a Slowyota; I mean Toyota Highlander. The next closest vehicle with enthusiastic driving is the Acura MDX.
We are interested in a 2006 MPV ES. Unfortunately, we are in Hawaii so we don't have much inventory on all islands - only 3 ES in the whole state. DEALER 1: Yesterday, we went to Dealer 1 who offered $500 over invoice to start with and an additional $2500 in rebates for the following: 2006 ES in Pearl White DVD Roof rack Rear spoiler Floor Mats Rear Bumper step plate Wheel Locks $27,095 ($500 over invoice minus $2,500 in rebates) without TTL, $29.095 out the door. When I told the sales manager that I had another quote from a dealer for $26,000, he got really hostile. He told me that there was no way I could have a quote lower than his since "I know what their cost is and there is no way anyone would go lower than us and lose money". I said I had the quote in the car and would show it to him. He again, got defensive and said there was no way I had a lower quote. He kept telling me what a great offer he made since it was almost $9K below their sales price. Of course, this included the $6K mark-up they tacked onto the $31,000 MSRP. I told him that I wasn't even considering the $6K as a starting point. He said the usual "What can I do to get you to buy this today?" and I told him there was nothing he could do since I was going to go to other dealers and was waiting on quotes from California. I said if the other dealer on Oahu went lower, I would call him there and if he would beat that price, I would come back. He got really hostile then and said, "Well, I don't appreciate you shopping my price around". I got P.O.'d at the attitude (I think because I am a woman and was alone, he thought he could bully me) and told him that I didn't want his quote since it was higher than the other dealer and handed him his paper back. He then said, "Oh, you can take that with you because you'll see they won't go lower". Needless to say, I left him with his printout in hand. Of course, that evening he sent me a nice e-mail thanking me for my time and asking me to contact him if I needed any help. DEALER 2: Dealer on Maui has a 2006 LX in Gray. Options include DVD, power sliding doors, floor mats, spoiler, LX-Plus package. They gave me a quote of $32,000. This is almost $8,000 over MSRP. Plus, another $200 to ship and 2-3 weeks to take delivery. DEALER 3 and 4: Other two dealers on Oahu have only LX in stock, none with power sliding doors or side airbags. After the IIHS results, I'm very hesitant to buy the LX without the side airbags. DEALER 5: We dealt with Dealer 5 over the internet. Salesman said their Costco price was better than the Internet Price. I think the two cars they have in stock are "leftovers" since the batteries in both vehicles did not work (Salesman said that if the car isn't started for a week, they tend to have dead batteries - hmmmmmm). The price they offered us for a 2006 ES in green: DVD Rear Spoiler Rear Bumper Step Pleate $28,319 invoice plus $875 costco price = $29,194 base $4,500 in rebates = $24,694 Plus doc fee ($185), licensing ($200), DMV proc ($45) and tax ($1225) Total out the door = $26350 This is the lowest TOD price we've gotten from anyone on the island by a good $2,000-$3,000. They have another in silver but it has the roof rack instead of the rear spoiler and cost $60 more. Any feedback on this deal? It seems a little high compared to the mainland prices which are under invoice. I saw an earlier post mentioning that "500 over invoice" is quite high and we would be paying more than that. It will probably cost us between $1500-$2000 to ship to Hawaii (not including the airfare to fly up there, complete the transaction and drive the car down to Long Beach for shipping). Also, I REALLY don't care for the green or silver. We told the salesman that we really would like a blue one and to get a quote from their painting guy to see what it would cost to paint either vehicle. We thought we would counter with $500 over invoice and 1/2 the cost of painting the vehicle (we don't think we'll get the paint thrown in but it won't hurt to ask). The only other vehicle that we are considering is the 2006 or 2007 Toyota Highlander since there are lots of those in stock. Unfortunately, there is only one company in Hawaii that sells Toyota so again, you are really at their mercy. They are offering a little under MSRP but still about $1500-$2000 above Edmunds. Plus, we just settled a law suit with the service company for our Lexus (which is owned by the same company in Hawaii that owns Toyota) so we are very concerned over having to deal with their service department again. We have a small cement carport so any other minivan is out of the question (aside from the GMC based ones which we drove but seem to have terrible ratings and reliability). We can't go any bigger than 73-73 inches in width but need 3 rows of seating (two big kids and 1 still in a car seat). Thanks again for your advice.
