Don't goto Manhattan Automobile Company
by seaweed20 on Fri Jan 23 18:06:21 PST 2009
After visiting the Manhattan Automobile Company (New York City, NY) and selecting a vehicle (2008 CX-9 GT AWD), I entered into a round of negotiations with the salesman, which lasted for a week. Finally, the salesman and I agreed on a price and the attached financing package for the vehicle that I was looking to buy. Having reached a verbal agreement over the phone, I went to the showroom and signed the order form and filled out and provided the relevant details to complete the purchase. The salesman took my order form to the general manager for approval and that is when things went awry. Not only did the general manager back out of the contract and refused to do the deal but he also greatly insulted me for negotiating the price and the financing terms. 1) I, as the buyer, have a right to negotiate. If the showroom did not want to then they should have said so and not indulged me into a week long discussion. 2) If we did end up negotiating, the last thing you want to do is blame the customer for doing so when your own salesman is the one who is putting forth revised terms and conditions. I have never been to a more uncouth establishment and would recommend that one should only go there if they want a free bag of insults and a truly inhospitable customer service experience.

I live in Long Beach New York (Long Island). Made the Deal at Manhattan Mazda in NYC Had quotes as well from Wantagh Mazda , Country Mazda in Huntington, Koeppell Mazda In Woodside NY The only dealer I disliked was Koeppell In woodside I think their sales force would be more comfortable slithering than walking. And all star Mazda in Hempstead never answered any of my requests. Wantagh and Country were the most responsive as far as sending prices via e-mail etc. I was a little leary of Manhattan because they would not e-mail or fax a work sheet , but they turned out to be honest and had the lowest quoted price. I have been talking and e-mailing this deal between the 4 dealers for almost a month , and if I wanted to persue it for another couple of weeks I probably could have dropped the price another 300. - 500. bucks, but I no longer consider the 2001 oldsmobile Silhouette reliable transportation for the wife and kids. And hey summers half gone they gotta take some trips somewhere.
Need lease help please, April 08

I have a quote for a 2008 Touring softtop MSRP $23,630 (no extra options) but I think I can negotiate a better 24 month lease deal via a lower Cap Cost. Deal includes $1,000 rebate, no security deposit, Quote included .00100 money factor. Just pay tax, plus $645 delivery/destination, plus $652.50 fees. Dealer just took $500 off the MSRP toward the sale price / initial cap cost (sale to Mazda Credit). Question #1, should I offer to do the deal if they reduce the $23,630 to $22,900 or better, $22,800 (all other things stay the same)? Edmunds shows the invoice at $22,501 and the True Market Value at $23,201. How many hundred over invoice is appropriate? Question #2 is what should the acquisition fee be in New York for Mazda Credit? I am in upstate NY. Still too cold for a convertible.
Buying 2008 Grand Touring TONIGHT!

That's right, I'm trading in my 2006 Mazda 5 Touring (which I bought in July 05, and was the first person in NY to purchase one - and, might I add, LOVE to pieces!) and getting a 2008 Mazda 5 Grand Touring (Sunlight Silver with Black leather interior). I am buying it from Manhattan Mazda from a really nice guy named Frank. He is selling it to me at INVOICE! I told him I didn't want to pay anything more than 24K OUT THE DOOR for the car and he is actually doing it. He's great! HIGHLY recommend this dealer and person for anyone shopping for a Mazda in New York. Turns out I am losing out on 1K on the transaction. They're giving me 12K for my 06 - even though Kelly Blue Book and everywhere else says Trade-in value is at least 13K - but I have researched other dealers and stuff and they are all offering the same amount. So, if you add the 1K I have in "upside down" amount to the 24K out the door price for the 08, then it comes out to only 25K for me. I got a lower interest rate on my loan! So, my monthly payment will actually be lower than my current payment for a new and improved 08 GRAND Touring! I couldn't resist the deal! So, yeah, I'm getting it tonight, and I'm pretty excited. Though, I am regretfully giving up my 06 5 that I called Max. He was my very first car ever, so I have a huge emotional attachment to it. But, I'm sure I'll have a huge emotional attachment to the new one, too! (Ooh, gotta think up a new name for the new one!)

As I said... "unless things are different in NY" (and I was asking whether tax is due UP FRONT in NY). I checked. According to the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance, notice N-90-12, "Before June 1, 1990, the tax was computed on the amount of each lease payment and collect at the time each payment was made; on and after June 1, 1990, the tax will be computed based on the total amount due under the lease agreement at the time of inception." This IS very different from California, which uses the New York "pre June 1, 1990" rules. Yet another reason I'm really glad I don't live in New York. Except that tax here in Los Angeles is 8-1/4% and I've read that it is only 6% on a vehicle in NY (but then, isn't it something like 11% or 12% on normal purchases?).
